Nothing in this hobby needs to be horribly expensive or catered to one specific thing. Yall are so helpful and so kind in this field.

I find an excellent technique is to buy a saturated "orange" from the craft store. Not the thick, rubbery type but the super cheap ones with the terrible lids. I slather it on, and since the paint is absolutely terrible, it dries streaky, patchy, and with a texture. I then drybrush some metallics on and it works SO well. People tell me "ugh you can't use craft paint!!!" but I love the subtle texture it gives and how easy it can be to layer on. Mini paint is still better of course, but for rough textures there's nothing like garbage paint!

Tip for anyone : for rust - doing a sandy diorama or model ( especially for tanks ) rust would be in more dotted areas and spotted with less corrosion due to moisture and not rain fall or puddled water
Tip2 - when doing rust on a tank or model consider the first appliance of rust, where water would pool and what would cause straches in paint ( such as the bearing on a turret ring of a tank ), rust would probably not form on a flat surface which is upright but on top of it - flowing down aswell as in crevices

I'd probably add a few more colours in there personally but this is a great tip for beginners

Did this on my death guard rhino and I love it so much, very long considering I went overboard with it but so worth it

If you just want to apply one effect color, look for Vallejos Rust FX. That stuff is insane! It looks 1:1 like real rust.

Yeah for the extra pop i threw some screws in a bucket tho which I add a bit of water every once in awhile, it’s my „rust-farm“ and i use it to stipple it on the orange part to get that gritty texture

Thx for the tip 😄 btw can I apply this technique on a matt surface gundam? Or does it only work on metallic? Thank you.

I mean you could also use like zandari dust

Dirty down rust is good as well. But expensive

I wouldn’t call the Dirty down effect paints fancy, they’re relatively inexpensive and looks super realistic
