Commissioned on September 10, 1945 — just 8 days after the end of World War II — the USS Midway is an aircraft carrier that served an impressive 47-year career in the United States Navy. She was the flagship of Carrier Division 1 (now “Carrier Strike Group 1”), and served in a number of peace-keeping missions including the Vietnam War and Operation Desert Storm.

Since 2004, the USS Midway has been operating as the largest naval ship museum in the world in San Diego, CA. If your travels ever bring you to San Diego, make sure you cruise down to the Embarcadero and check out the USS Midway Museum for yourself!

My husband, proud United States Marine, served in intelligence on the Midway in the 60s in the P.I. He showed me the desk where he worked. Buried by the Marines here in San Diego in the Kaplan section of the cemetary with other Marines going back to the 1800s.

I served about the USS Midway from 1988 to 1991, including Desert Shield and Desert Strom. I have been back to visit the grand lady several times over the years and am pleased that she is still thriving in her post-Navy afterlife. Thank you for this expose on this amazing piece of Naval history.

I was able to tour the USS Midway while in San Diego on a business trip. Loved the tour. As an Army vet, it was great to see how sailors lived on a carrier.

Just got back from a trip to San Diego. Took the tour, What a fantastic experience. Especially the retired guides who served on the Midway. So much history. We ran out of time, so they simply stamp your ticket & let you go the next day at no extra charge. A must see for anyone visiting SD.

I remember visiting the USS Midway museum when my family visited San Diego for my uncle's Marine Corps graduation. It was one of my favorite parts of the visit.

In 1989 the midway entered port in my home town of Perth in the port of Fremantle. The ship was open for tours and we managed to take one and walk around the ship. As an 11 year old it was the first time I'd gotten to see F-18's and other planes up close. The experience has stuck with me over the years.

Lived in San Diego from 1982 to 2006 and never saw the Midway! Guess I'll have to take a trip back to see it! Great video.

My dad was a plane captain on the USS midway from 1978-1982. I'd love to see this ship in person.

I served aboard the Midway in 1980 with VMFP-3, a Marine photo recon squadron flying RF-4B's. I've been back to the ship a few times since it opened as a museum. Thanks for this video!!

I rode this ship to the Philippines in 1991 as a Marine to evacuate our Air Assets due to the volcano, Mt Pinatubo! She was a steam driven ship and when they went flank speed it down shifted like a damn cars..it was an amazing time and it had a lean..Awesome!
