Naval Legends: USS Midway | World of Warships

The idea to build a marvel like that was suggested by the US Navy’s Bureau of Ships as far back as in 1940. For American admirals, this was a dream: a carrier that would be robust as a battleship and have at least 120 aircraft on board. As a result, Midway was so much better than all other US Navy attack carriers, that it was distinguished as a new type — battlecarriers. Midway turned out to be a truly unsinkable ship.

Naval Legends is a series about the construction, service, and daring deeds of legendary 20th-century ships.

World: “WTF AMERICA WHY DID YOU BUILD THIS KIND OF CARRIER?”
US: “what? You want to see me do it 2 more times?”

"Japanese Built Yamato, American Built Midway"

Truth, knowing Uss midway built around a hull that was that Montana class Super battleship, that meant to engage in combat Yamato.

9:30 no air conditioning??? I had so much air conditioning that even in the Indian Ocean I had to have three blankets to sleep, and several of my shipmates in my division had purchased Korean blankets to supplement the Navy issued ones.

The best aircraft carrier I've ever served aboard in my twenty years career in the Navy, I was a Boiler Technician (BT) aboard her from 1985-88 "B" Division, Yokosuka, Japan

The difference between China’s wall, Egypt’s pyramids, and America’s Midway to Japan’s Yamato is that one is destroyed, the others aren’t

I'm surprised that it also help humanitarian purposes after the Mt. Pinatubo erupted. I'm so happy as a Filipino

is it weird that ships look “sexy”? not in a weird way but a satisfying way. example: Iowa Class’s Bow

You left out Midway's amazing service history. One of the first carriers to get an angled flight deck. Her flight deck went through several changes before the configuration of today's museum ship.
She went from operating the WW-II aircraft you mentioned. To F-14, A-6, A-7, S-3, and E-2 aircraft in the 1980s. In a career that lasted more than forty years! Until USS Enterprise CVN-65 retired. Midway was the longest serving USN aircraft carrier. This ship pioneered all the procedures modern carriers use today.

Midway Sailor here. 1986-1988 with VA-115. Got to see Bob Hope for his Chistmas special among many other experiences.
