I feel like due to the prevalence of toxic sororities/frats in the media, ppl just assume there's only those types, but I think they're legitimately nice ones out there. It's just the 10% of the bad ones get overrepresented.

im an American and I don't understand sororities or fraternities... like who thought that would be a good idea? get a bunch of hormonal kids who just got out of high school and think theyre hot shit, tell them to form cliques in which you have to pass a series of humiliating or unpleasant tasks, tell them to compete with the other cliques, give them unlimited booze and parties and expect them to get a good education?

But isn't it basically paying for friends?? Sororities can be so expensive, I actually considered it in freshman year for a hot second 'till they told me the price. Hellll no, I'm gonna stick to awkwardly making small talk while waiting for the professor to show up, thanks.

For those of y'all who don't know a sorority is generally a group of women in an organization, thats sometimes over 100 years old, who follow the traditions that all the women before them in that organization have. There are 27 National Panhellenic Sororities that have chapters at colleges across the nation. All of the groups have a philanthropy that they hold events to raise money and awareness for, and are sometimes that causes biggest supporters (Tri Delt and St. Jude, Theta and CASA, Chi O and Make a Wish). Yes, there is some partying, and yes there are a few chapters across the nation who don't represent us well, but that is a very small percentage. As a sorority woman, I feel so fortunate to have met my sisters and to have the opportunity to know girls I might not have even seen on campus otherwise, who are my best friends.

The only thing that ever stopped me was the price. ZTA is amazing, and I have made many friends in that network on my own. People are going to drink and experiment in college anyway, it's just easier when you start college with a group of friends that have been doing it longer and know how to make the most of it. I didn't have any trouble at all making a large network of friends on my own when I got to college, but I would love to have gone through the rushing process to find out one of my best friends had put in a bid for me.

Sorority = sisterhood
Fraternity = brotherhood
