Thanks for this great video. There were songs here I hadn’t heard before, even though there were only parts of them. But there was also information about their lives that I had never read anywhere before, such as the fact that Maybelle’s husband, Ezra, had to be convinced by
A.P. to let her accompany them to Bristol, TN, to make their first recording. It’s not a super important fact, but it shows a bit of Ezra’s personality, and of A.P.’s and Maybelle’s as well. And it shows what the times were like.
I wasn’t so interested in the 3 daughters because they are closer to our own times and culture. But everything that has to do with the first 3 members of the Carter family, especially their early music collected from the hollows and hills of the Appalachia, before they became successful, is fascinating to me. Their culture was pristine and poor, unaffected by influences from New York or Europe, and for the folks of that world God came first. It’s obvious in their lyrics. My own faith is not the same as theirs, but I find it wonderful and amazing that they disregarded worldliness, and when it came time to sing before the entire world, they sang about their God and were not ashamed.
