Voltage Booster (Boost converter)

I test and review a boost converter bought from ebay. I also explain how a boost converter works, so this doubles up as a tutorial-ish-video ;o))

Where can I buy those boost converters???

read about boost converter last week and it peaked my interest i will build one with only discrete parts no controller chip or ne555. pulse won't be perfect rectangles but will trigger an nmos just fine and it will also have variable duty-cycle !

I have several of these and they do the job well. When you were drawing that circuit and talking about the switch opening and closing I kept saying, put a switching transistor in there such as NPN 2n2222 and it will work as a joule thief.

I wondered why Ever Ready vanished. They were the most common make in the UK, they were good. The AA and other batteries had to be removed when flat or they squirted some horrible gunk out and ruined whatever they were in. I believe that Duracell still make them - zinc - carbon, something like that. Nice simple explanation of a boost / buck converter.

I just subscribed, I want to know if this boost converter can handle input of 12v 200A, Chinese sellers rated input current 10A maximum, am suspecting their could be referring to discharge current. Can I use the device on a car battery?

What is different about the electrons in a capacitor that measures 100V to the electrons in a capacitor at just 10V? I've heard the analogy of voltage as water pressure. What property of the electron differs though? The amount of electrons is measured in Coulombs... yes. And the current in amperes is the amount of coulombs flowing past a point each second. Do those electrons move faster if you have a greater potential difference? I assume so... but what is different about those higher voltage electrons? What makes them have more pressure and the potential to break through resistance and even jump air gaps? Is it something to do with the strength of the electrical field?

I am attempting to make this circuit and have had some issues. I can't get the switching to working despite double checking all the connections to 555 timing circuit. I tested all the voltage points and get adequate readings but the chip will sometimes cook or the MOSFET gets super hot. All this and no voltage build up in the cap beyond the source voltage. Any ideas?

I am not sure who made Ever Ready but they were sold in the UK. I usually buy elec. bits from 'Ruth' at Banggood in China. I'm sure there are a lot of 'Ruth's' at Bangggod, Very polite email. It takes weeks to get the bits though. One bit never turned up so they sent me another, a 400W 60V buck converter. I do enjoy your video's, often they are not my sort but I still watch them. I think your more fun than what your video's show. I'm not flirting, Iv'e been married 43 years. So many are too serious on YouTube. I'm still catching up on your earlier video's. When are you going to do a video on rebuilding a Cray computer - LOL.

can you tell me what is the max voltage that you can get out of that unit on this video I want to know if it can produce 140 volts I really need AC to DC boost converter

Very nice!
What kind of booster is this? What is the model? I want o search in the eBay or other else.

What happens when we upgrade the output capacitors to higher capacitance or higher voltage?

@ 4:25 isn't that a Schottky Diode?

Ah, so a voltage booster is like a joule thief, but better and simpler in design.

u r cool. i need 120 to 140. my massfeed. is dun on powe sply one is volt one is Cornish to adjust the voltage mourners to adjust the current you mostly find ones that only has voltage adjustment

That is easy if you want to power small loads...very small loads of course.! How about amps??? Only a few miliamps..!! The important is to modify this to give you enough power to drive bigger loads . But be aware of these circuits. Do NOT try to supply phones or any device like these because the output voltage is not stable at all when current is drawn from the system. They totally depend of the source voltage. (Battery).
