Meta's Connect 2022 keynote in under 13 minutes

Connect is the annual conference where, in 2021, Mark Zuckerberg announced that Facebook was changing its name to Meta, and that it was betting big on something called the metaverse. We followed this year's conference closely, eager to hear updates on the company's metaverse plans. Technology, in my view, should make things easier. You have a need - some piece of technology fills that need. This feels like the inverse: technology for its own sake. Rather than making something easier or more useful (say, access to all media on a handheld device).

Man, those spokespeople all had either really freaky body shapes, or unnatural body language, or real strange way of talking. They made Zukerberg look like the most normal guy in the room. Kinda creepy.

This stuff has already been around for 19 years with Second Life. SL has only ever been a niche thing; never moving passed repeated attempts by big businesses to create their presence in the SL world. In the same way, after the novelty wears off, Meta's VR will become nothing more than a niche thing too.

Metaverse is the weirdest thing ever. Not a regular person in the world has said it's something that is remotely excting, it's just a corporate gimmick trying desperatly to stay relevant and create new avenues for revenue.

Cool stuff but all the presenters felt extremely weird and robotic. As if they were all just some visual projection from a computer program. I'm all for technological advances but I pray we don't lose our humanity in the process
