2 Month Old Sleep Schedule - Tips & Guidelines from Sleep Consultant Dr Sarah Mitchell

-A 2-month-old will not have a predictable sleep schedule day to day. Aspects of the schedule will be starting to be consistent but nap length can vary day to day as can wake up time.

What’s important during this time is making sure that your 2-month-old is gaining weight well and getting enough rest overall.

~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~

I teach a “flexible schedule” or a “daily flow.” This helps you gather some predictability to your day as you can project ahead to what your baby will need in a few hours. The idea is that every time your baby wakes up, you are projecting out to when the next nap should fall. Every time your baby eats during the day you are projecting out to the next 3 hours to when the next feed needs to be.

A set schedule where 9 am is nap time doesn’t usually occur until 9 months or when your baby is on 2 naps a day. That’s because there is so much growth and change happening over these next few months. Her sleep needs will change dramatically.
I also hate waking up sleeping babies. If you’re sticking to a set schedule, you might have to wake your baby up to “preserve” that schedule. I’d rather teach you the parenting skills to know how to meet your baby’s needs with a “daily flow” so that you and your baby are adaptable and good at troubleshooting when the day isn’t going your way. Which happens.

I thought I had it bad and was concerned. My son sleeps all the time. Some days he doesn’t want to nap during the day but I can get up to two hour naps throughout the day. He is also naturally on a pretty set schedule with maybe a 1-2 hour change during the course of the day but he will end up back on schedule by the next day ( he just knows lol) he had bad reflux which was messing up his schedule but once that was resolved he was back on track. He has night bottle at 7 usually is up at 2-3 and then is up again at 7am. Right now he is on a more challenging schedule. I’m trying to get ready for daycare and his feedings unterrupt my morning routine. He sleeps 5p-1a-5a which 5am is when I need to be leaving for work so… pray for me lol

My LO is 9 weeks old now and she just started sleeping well through the night waking once to eat (Generally from 8pm to 8am) after flipping her night and day sleep confusion but now doesn't want to sleep during the day. I struggle to put her to sleep just to have her wake up within 10-15mins of laying her down in her crib. I watch her wake time and play sufficient time to tire her. I also watch for her sleep cues which is about 45 mins to an hour later of waking for the morning and immediately start to assist her to sleep. If I manage to put her sleep it won't last longer than 20 mins she wakes up fussy bc she is still sleepy and I spend most of the day trying to get her back to sleep.😫 It's like a never ending cycle through out the day. I have also noticed that she will open her eyes to make sure I am still holding her while she sleeps in my arms. Could she be having separation anxiety? I thought she was too young for this. Or maybe she just wants to be in my arms. My mother has watched her a few times as well during the day and also noticed that she is not sleeping. She eats 4oz every 4 hrs during the day at 8am, 12pm, 4pm and sometimes 6oz at 8pm. Wakes up at 3 am to feed onces and wakes at 8am. Maybe she needs to eat fewer ounces and shorter times spans? After all day of trying to put her to sleep she will fall asleep with no efforts right around 6pm bc she is soo exhausted from not sleeping all day. I am worried for her development bc she should be getting at least 14 hrs of sleep at this age. I am also so very tired and exhausted too and don't know what to do at this point.

Just watched this, and my baby is 2 months and similar to how you describe starting at 2:36… how do we fix this?! She’s eating every hour and sleeping 20 minute intervals all day and at best 3 hours at night! I’m going crazy

I feel my 2 month old is doing ok at night- last night she slept a 5.5hr stretch followed by a 3 hr stretch! During the day however, she never wants to nap! If I let her, she would stay up for the entire day! I have tried to follow wake windows and encourage naps to happen but she gets frantic as soon as she is swaddled. She usually is calm until the swaddle is on and has a hard time calming down, even if I hold her and bounce. Putting her to sleep takes about 20-30 minutes of me bouncing her until drowsy, putting her in the crib, her becoming inconsolable even with me shushing her (binky in mouth doesn't work sometimes either). After 30 seconds of a struggle in her crib, I start over with the bouncing and putting her down while drowsy. I feel awful for her because she is usually calm until the nap time begins. What am I doing wrong??

My son is almost 2 months old and he stays awake for 2-3 hours at a time during the day time. Like even after I feed him and comfort him and try to rock him and nothing lol. He fights nap time

My 2 month old can sleep 6 hours through the night at least. Is that normal? Am I still supposed to wake him every 3 hours? Sometimes he doesn’t seem to be hungry and just wants to sleep within those night hours

My 2 month old baby is very late to sleep during night, she sleeps by 3 am in morging and gets up by 11 am. Being a working mother it's very hard for me this schedule. Kindly advice a solution to make her sleep earlier

My baby feeds for sometimes up to 45-an hour, and she always falls asleep at the breast no matter how recently she slept. She also refuses to wait 3 hours to feed again, she’s clearly hungry still in between these “intentional feeds”

(I read your book)

It makes it impossible to project out: I can’t tell when she’s sleeping, when she’s hungry, or when to know when to put her down again. And then she seems like the calm but awake method of rocking her with my hand or interacting with her that way keeps her wide awake…

Theres no set schedule 🤣🤣 My 2 month old basically stay up from 11pm or midnight til 6am, and sleep 7am to 9am then stays asleep to 2pm then 2pm to 7pm. Trying to break this habit.

My baby is officially three months old but was born a month early so is two months corrected. She refuses to sleep independently during the day. The moment she is put in the Moses basket to be swaddled she wakes up and refuses to settle again. The most I’ve had her stay down for is twenty minutes. But she can sleep for 90 minutes if I just hold her - what can I do to help this?! I also don’t know if I should be working to a two month old schedule or three month. Please help

Hello Doc, thank you for this valuable information. Based on this video, is it safe to say that I should not wake up my 6 week old to eat? I believe this may have lead him to be overly tired. I look forward to your response, first time father here. thank you!
