In this video we begin work on our "Character Effects" system. What will this logic do? Essentially it will process all character effects, such as taking damage, or healing.

We separate the effects into 3 different types. Instant (Taking damage, or healing), Timed (Poison, or Scarlet Rot) and Static (Modifying armor or damage values when wearing a talisman).

Having each effect as a scriptable object, allows us to easily edit or add onto each individual effect in one simple location, instead of changing logic across potentially dozens of scripts. With each effect getting its own scriptable, it's very easy to add additional logic to each effect. You could add sound effects for example or particles effects, and much more.

The tutorial is really great, I recently bought the animation package under the video link, it is more convenient to learn, because my English is poor, so I have to use Chatgpt, Google's subtitle translation and other translation software, these great inventions make me understand what you say more, thank you Internet, thank you. Absolutely loving the series! I just realized before I started watching this video that my player can roll out of a jump which is actually kind of cool so I might keep it. Not sure if I missed something earlier that would have prevented that from happening or if it's covered later in the series, but just thought I'd throw it out there in case it hasn't been mentioned yet

I like how you abstracted effects into scriptable objects. I can see how this will keep our managers simple while allowing effects to be very modular and easy to update. Can't wait to get to AI and Combat, but I appreciate how we're setting a good foundation here. Thanks for another great video!

Great learnt a new approach regarding editing data in the scriptable objects, I never thought about that, duplicating the object does infact make things easier now.

This confused me so much when you introduced it in the Dark Souls series because we already had so much functionality to negotiate through, but here I understand its merits much clearer. Thank you for this series it's a real gem

EDIT: I think showcasing the getter and setter would be very helpful for both myself and anyone who hasn't been introduced to those concepts yet!
