FILMMAKING RIG - Reasons FOR & AGAINST - Sony A7sIII & A7IV CAMERA RIG for CINEMATIC VIDEO

🔥 LEARN COLOR GRADING FROM ME:

Does a rig really make you a better filmmaker? I think the better question here is WHEN will a rig make you a better filmmaker because if you don’t use it in the right context, it might actually cost you! In this video I share my reasoning behind how I rig up my camera but also why I sometimes prefer to leave it behind. Every shoot is different and should be considered in its own context. Over the past 12 years I’ve shot a variety of genres and I’ve also made my fair share of mistakes when it comes to gear choices which has led me to a more simplistic approach. To help you avoid some of these mistakes I’ve compiled a check list of 4 things that I reason FOR and AGAINST using a camera rig and I still use this on all my shoots no matter how big or small. #filmmakingrig #cinematic #sonyA7sIII #SonyA7IV #camerarig

Full disclosure, SmallRig didn’t pay me to make this video, I simply love their gear and I’ve been using it long before they reached out to me. They were kind enough to send me some accessories but have no say in the final outcome and the views reflected here are 100% mine.

As someone trying to establish a video business, it's pretty easy to tell who the working professionals are (like you, and a small group of other youtubers) and who the are. Thank you for content like this. It's so much more useful than the click-bait crap most are putting out there. Keep it up man.

Pro tip: buy the biggest matte box you can find. You’ll instantly get clients and make thousands of dollars.

Bro! You have literally become my favourite filmmaking channel on Youtube. 💯
Honestly, so much much value and the BTS shots you gathered over the last projects are beautiful.

It was a pleasure to meet you a few weeks ago and I can't wait to start another adventure together! 🙌🏽

There is 100’s of YouTubers saying the same stuff, reviewing the sane stuff and then there is you, showing us how a real professional shoots. Massive value can’t believe you shot the A7S3 launch video hand held I do long that video, my god your shot so many cameras for Sony with that video it was fantastic. 🙌

Excellent points. One more tip about the Rig, is that though many people have great ideas about rig building, everyone who puts some time into this will notice that they have their own particular needs and will build their Rig according to this.

This is the best rig vs no rig video I've seen. You covered so much and you showed a bunch of footage too.

Love your videos! Thank you so much for sharing all the valuable information and showcasing how you actually apply yourself all the knowledge.
A quick question: I am really hesitating about purchasing a monitor (for wedding and family shooting, so I need to be quick and adjust to the changing environment). My main concerns would be:
- controlling the exposure on the s-log3
- seing better (not on a small back screen of the camera)
- probably helping the stabilization by adding the weight
How would you suggest taking a decision?
Do you think for this type of shooting the screen is really needed?

Very good points, that’s why I built my rig so I can quickly switch between full rig and base rig on gimbal.
I keep a half-cage + Nucleus Nano motor + baseplate + mattebox on even on the gimbal.
I just remove the nato top handle complete with monitor, nato side handle, battery plate from the back.

Awesome tips. One reason my SmallRig cage never leaves the camera is for protection. It’s small enough to stay on the Siii without being too intrusive. Love SmallRig products, affordable and great quality.
Keep up the great content! Hope to see you soon in the new year

Very seldom I hit Like, Subscribe and then Comment after watching anyone's video for the first time, but this is one of those rare cases where the professionalism, experience and good taste comes through in a well crafted product. Great job, great value. Thank you.

been using a monitor + mic rig for years, but recently it just nice to pop a mic on the hot shoe and keep things simple

A good solution for a Cage and Gimbal setup is the following (at least to me):
I use the EOS R6 with a SmallRig Cage that has NATO Rails. It's super fast to detach the handle and the R6 with cage and a 24-105mm fits onto an DJI RSC2. 👌🏼
Initial balancing needs a bit of patience but that's okay.

I agreed. Technology is to aid you, not to cripple you. I am one of those who need a monitor big enough for me to better judge my shots.
