More UK prisoners released early to ease overcrowding crisis

Eleven hundred prisoners are being released early - as part of the Government's emergency scheme to ease the overcrowding crisis in jails across England and Wales.

The Prime Minister said he "shared public anger" at the sight of inmates walking free but said there was "no choice".

A wholescale review of sentencing - to be led by the former Conservative Justice secretary David Gauke - was also announced today - part of a raft of measures to avoid what the government said could be "complete paralysis" of the entire legal system.

The vast majority of prisoners in Prison are serving sentences of less than 4yrs, after that you have prisoners serving just on or slightly above four years, then after that you have prisoners serving well over four years but not quite determinate life sentenced prisoners and then you have the indeterminate life sentenced prisoners and the left over indeterminate IPP sentenced prisoners.
The populations within each segment varies and over the years the population of long term (4 yrs and over) prisoners has grown, but they are ALWAYS outweighed by the population of short (any sentence under 4yrs) term prisoners: the revolving door brigade of first timers and habitual recidivists getting longer sentences each time they are convicted UNTIL they get their 4yrs plus.
If a means and method could be found to address this population of inmate, a large proportion of the Prison System's problems would be solved and the Prison's Estate would have the room to begin meaningful challenge and rehabilitation and reform/recovery, not to say reclamation of the lives of long term inmates thus fulfilling one of the primary purposes of Prison in the first place.
Building more Prisons and adding new (and expensive Wings to existing Prisons WITHOUT meaningful reform regarding WHO goes to Prison, and WHO serves their sentence in the Community is an awful waste of tax payers money.
