The Day Katana Disappear #Shorts

If you’re watching this video, you may be a katana lover like me. But did you know that there is a risk that authentic katana might become something of the past in our generation?

Only 10 years ago, there were said to be about 300 sword smiths left, but now there are only about 180. In other words, there is a possibility that the number of sword smiths will decrease by more than 100 in the next 10 years. In addition, a sword smith I met told me that there are only about 10 sword smiths in their 30s, and only 2 or 3 in their 20s. After the current older generation retires, these only 15 people will build the next generation.

The main reason for the decline of the katana industry to this point is that the Japanese economic downturn has made it difficult to sell katana, and masters can no longer take on apprentices.

As a katana martial artist, I want to stop this at all costs.

Unfortunately, it's the byproduct of our times. Here in my village, we used to have custom saddle makers for horses, camels and donkeys 50 years ago. But now there is only one 90-year-old guy left and he makes saddles for tourists for novelty.

Sounds like the government should step in and work with the currently existing smiths on a new program to ensure that an aspect of the Japanese culture does not die out. I find it wild that a western company did more for a small part of japan than the gov is willing to do to get people interested in their own society.

The Japanese Army could commission credentialed sword smiths to make katana for officers and for awards, like how some European armies will award soldiers with a "sword of honour" for outstanding conduct.

No matter how many artists there are, art will never die.

It's sad to see such beautiful traditions and craftsmanship slowly disappearing in our day.

The katana, out of all swords, is a masterpiece and needs to be carried on. I hope more people in the Japanese culture will become aware of this decline in swords smiths and take on the tradition.

There’s a russian saying “свято место пусто не бывает”, “a blessed place is never empty”. There will always be someone. Because of traditions at least, because of how the demand will outgrow the supply at most.

Perhaps if traditional apprenticeships didn't require years of unpaid full-time employment, there would be space for new apprentices!

The remaining swordsmiths should save their practice digitally. As a way of preserving the traditional way of smithing katanas for a future generation to take on.

this is a serious problem for the not-too-far-away future.

As a blacksmith and former teacher of smithing, maybe I should help change this.

I strongly believe that Japan should allow sword making to be a sort of hybrid trade school/traditional degree program run at public universities.

Allow swordsmiths to run the program with history teachers and have it be an degree program with robust government funded workshops at said universities.

Upon graduation there should be significant government grants to enable people to set up their own swordsmith shop or to work at a handful of government run workshops.

If Japan maintains a feudal era system for training swordsmiths it will mean that this incredibly precious cultural skill will be inaccessible to current and future generations.

And finally, the government exam to be a licensed swordsmith should be based solely on skill, knowledge, quality of character, and sincerity of heart.

If a person studied blacksmithing and sword making abroad and can make a proper katana with traditional Japanese methods then it shouldn't matter whether or not they apprenticed under a licensed swordsmith in Japan.

Maybe the government can fund apprentices in order to keep culture and tradition alive.

Well, I guess Shogo has to start learning how to make katana now 😊

I hope something can be done about this.

Because I like Japanese culture, especially samurai related stuff.

And just seeing or technically hearing that they're going to be less Japanese sword Smiths pains me and makes me sad.😟😞

I just hope they'll be more future Japanese sword smiths in the future, just to keep the memory of Japanese/samurai culture alive.

Gee whiz, not many people are willing or even able to burn years of their lives working a full time job for absolutely no compensation? Truly tragic. Imagine my shock.
