John Farnham - Help (LIVE with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra)

John Peter Farnham AO is a British-born Australian singer. Farnham was a teen pop idol from 1967 until 1979, billed then as Johnny Farnham, but has since forged a career as an adult contemporary singer. Wikipedia
Born: July 1, 1949 (age 73 years), Dagenham, United Kingdom
Lyrics
I need somebody
(Help) not just anybody
(Help) you know I need someone, help
So much younger than today
(I never need) I never needed anybody's help in any way
(Now) but now these days are gone (these days are gone)
I'm not so self assured
(And now I find) now I find I've changed my mind
And opened up the doors
Help me if you can, I'm feeling down
And I do appreciate you being 'round
Help me get my feet back on the ground
Won't you please, please help me
In oh so many ways
(My independ-) my independence seems to vanish in the haze
(But) but every now and then (now and then)
I feel so insecure
(I know that I) I know that I just need you like
I've never done before
Help me if you can, I'm feeling down
And I do appreciate you being 'round
Help me get my feet back on the ground
Won't you please, please help me
When I was younger, so much younger than today
I never needed anybody's help in any way
(Now) but now these days are gone (these days are gone)
I'm not so self assured
(And now I find) now I find I've changed my mind
And opened up the doors
Help me if you can, I'm feeling down
And I do appreciate you being 'round
Help me get my feet back on the ground
Won't you please, please help me, help me, help me, ooh

Would you believe...no American label would give this guy a go? Excuses like 'he is too old' and 'he might sell in Australia but he would never sell here' is all that his manager could get out of the major record labels in the US. In the end his manager took out a mortgage on his own home to fund the recording of the album, Whispering Jack, which went on to be absolutely massive and stats say one in three households in Australia owned...we love our John, Australian royalty.

The thing to remember here too, is that this performance came at the end of a 2hr concert - no lip syncing or auto tune here, just what is arguably the best live performance you may ever see

God speed to John Farnham in his recovery from jaw surgery.

I never tire of watching people discover our John and this song in particular surprises everyone. Especially when he cranks it up a notch in the second verse. Your American Music industry really dropped the ball on this one. But us Aussies are not complaining, as we got to keep him all to ourselves. Such power, such clarity, amazing tone, just the right amount of grit and a whole lot of Soul!!!! And such a long successful career with number one hits spanning 6 consecutive decades...absolute living Legend. Enjoy

"Thank you Melbourne. Good night. Be careful". This was his last song in a two and a half hour concert - and he BELTED it out. Completely nailed it. John Farnham is an astonishing talent. If you believe in a supreme being, please pray for John. He's had some of his jaw removed to get rid of a cancerous growth.

Look how far the mike is from his vocal cords, you see how thick his neck muscles are

If you really want your minds blown then check out John Farnham doing a version of Black Dog by Led Zeppelin. He used to do it as his warm up / sound check before his concerts, it is incredible.

Insane how I just found out about him today. Farnham has that Lou Gramm thing going but with a little more clarity in his vocal tone. I think John Farnham is surely one of the best singers this world has ever seen. Does that sound like hyperbole? Not to me.

In a interview John Farnham said ; That he did hear that John Lennon did listen to his rearrangement of Help but didn’t receive any feedback while John Lennon was still alive . John Farnham released Help in August 1980 John Lennon sadly died in December that same year. Both John’s have mutual friend and that’s Elton John, apparently it was Elton that gave John Lennon a copy of John Farnham’s Help single while John Lennon was in the studio finishing up on Double Fantasy album with Yoko Ono. But Yoko did add one John Farnham’s live performances of Help to John Lennon tribute album / video album in the early 90s . So John Lennon must have liked it .
Paul McCartney has given many praisers for John Farnham’s version over the decades. Paul said once ; John Farnham captures the real emotional essence of Help while we ( The Beatles) felt obligated to make to make the serious song Beatle ish pop, which frustrated us, John Lennon more so because it was John Lennon’s first self reflecting song .

"Can you imagine being present?" And everyone there is. No mobile phones back then trying to record. Everyone there is present, singing along in unison, in the moment, together. One of the most amazing live performers.... ever.

If you check out any of his live versions of 'Amazing Grace', you will see that he holds the mic further away form his mouth than any of the other singers, yet still manages to overpower them all! A once in a generation singer!

John Farnham is the GOAT.

There is no way you can rate The Beatles' skiffle version of this song ever again.
