If you are a current college student or alumni you might get the unlimited Google Drive storage for free. I'm a California State alumni and use it to store my backup images. Works great

If you value a high level of privacy, Google Drive probably won’t be for you. Google admits to actively scanning and analyzing everything you upload. They do this to “provide you personally relevant product features, such as customized search results, tailored advertising, and spam and malware detection.” Mainly, they’re interested in monetizing you with advertising. Been using this for years, and have several terabytes on there. One thing I'd recommend is encrypting everything before sending it up to your Google drive if you want to be super safe.

Ensure you select the 12 dollar business tier. Individuals getting 30gb appear to be selecting the basic tier. I just went for the $12 to see what would happen (rolled the dice) and "yes" it does show unlimited storage. Promo Code did not work but that's ok! I haven't pushed the 1TB per user limit if under 5 users yet to completely verify the "unlimited" indication but all in due time. (fyi, if you don't have a domain already then you can register one when you sign up which will cost you 10 to 12 bucks a year).

Synology CloudSync is fairly expensive. "Synology C2 cloud backup pricing is listed as 69.99 Euros per terabyte (TB) per year, or roughly $6.60 USD per TB per month."

Happy Birthday, Chuck. Although, the Over the Hill is a moving target. I hit 50 next year so I speak from 20 years of experience. I love coffee but I need to wait a few years before I can grow the beard. I have 6+ years of active duty left before I can.

As for the NAS, I have two on my network one is a western digital Live Duo. The other is one I am building right now, literally, using an SBC, and multiple USB sleds with various drives for a total of 8.5 TB.

It's another Google scam. No longer works. They changed the terms to 5tb per user. And now users will have to download all the data or they will delete. It's like a bait and switch.

I don't use Google Drive, as much as I'd want to. I've had stuff on there just....go down for no reason by it being against ToS or had my uploading priveliges revoked for violation of ToS for a period of time.
I doubt its human interaction caused but is purely based on automated scanning. But it did it after the fact I uploaded it.

As jank as OneDrive kind of is, I use it and other services more. I can't condone to using google for storage because of this.

Two things, you forgot to mention that you can/should encrypt your data and two IF/When Google enforces the one TB limit, you can simply find 4 friends or family to join in order to unlock unlimited or pay for 4 additional accounts yourself.
