Track characteristics, car strengths and updates: Ferrari vs McLaren for F1 world championship dream

Показать описание
The Brazilian Grand Prix at the 4.309-kilometre Autodromo José Carlos Pace in São Paulo has all but confirmed Max Verstappen’s re-crowning as Formula 1 world champion. However, the Constructors' Championship remains wide open. Red Bull faces challenges stemming from a significant performance disparity between its drivers, compounded by an RB20 that, despite its victory in São Paulo, has yet to consistently reestablish itself as a dominant contender. With the standings remaining tight, the fight for the World Constructors' Championship has boiled down to a direct showdown between McLaren and Ferrari, set to unfold over the final three races of the 2024 season in Las Vegas, Lusail, and Abu Dhabi.
The opening chapter of this battle will take place on Saturday, November 23, at the 6.2-kilometre Las Vegas Strip Circuit. This Nevada street track is defined by its slow, short, 90-degree corners, demanding a setup that prioritizes mechanical grip through advanced suspension tuning. Additionally, the circuit’s long straights necessitate low-downforce aerodynamic configurations reminiscent of those used at Monza. Ferrari enters the event with optimism, confident in its mechanical strengths, particularly in traction and handling curbs at low speeds. McLaren, meanwhile, struggled at this circuit in 2023, with Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri qualifying 16th and 19th. Since then, however, McLaren has made significant strides in both low-drag efficiency and agility in tight, slow corners, positioning them as a more formidable threat.
Las Vegas shares key similarities with the Baku City Circuit, where McLaren demonstrated competitiveness this season, though Ferrari emerged as the car to beat overall. Nevertheless, each track presents its own challenges. The Las Vegas night race, for instance, will see cold temperatures that, combined with the circuit’s low energy demands, make it difficult to bring tires up to optimal temperature. Ferrari, while predictable and stable, is among the slowest cars to heat its tires over a single lap, complicating its chances of replicating the pole position it achieved in Baku.
With Las Vegas, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi on the horizon, the Constructors' Championship battle is poised to hinge not only on raw performance but also on factors such as reliability and strategy, with innovations like mini-DRS playing a role in shaping the outcomes.
