This photo presented a perfect opportunity to shoot with a tripod and expose for 3 different areas - highlights, midtones and shadows.

Seems a little blown out, my apologies if this was intentional! Great tutorial nonetheless :)

easy and fast, but wont work on all images. Only on those with one side really white. On other will produce color halos.
Should try ACR Filter first.
Nice thing anyway.
If you first set the copy of the layer to Color blend mode, you can see how much blur you need.
And immediately after the blur you can go to menu Edit/Fade Gaussian Blur... and set the blend mode to Darken or Lighten to restrict effect to only darker or lighter parts to get rid of color halos. Doesn't work everywhere, but nothing does :)

I really can't see how you can use any kind of Blur effect for disguising or removing CAs  without it effecting the entire image. Surely the effected area would need to be isolated before treatment, perhaps with the lasso tool.
