You should make it clear that this will only work if the background of the object layer is solid white or very light solid grey like in the example, and the image should preferably be grey scale.

You can also simply apply a drop shadow and go up to Layers and select "make layer" that makes the shadow be an editable object on its own layer. Tons faster and easier.

You could also double click on the layer to access the fx thingy and there will be a drop shadow you could use and adjust
