Odin didn't banish Thor, it was Balder who was king of Asgard at the time(Odin was dead and locked in eternal combat with Surtur's spirit) and it was discovered that Balder was Odin's son and rightful heir to the throne.

Not to pick nits but in this storyline Odin didn't banish Thor, Balder did as he was the acting King at the time. Odin wasn't alive at that time (I think he was battling Surtur in a hell loop at the time).
