I teach survival and I volunteer in search and rescue. This man knows what he's talking about. Listen to him.

REMEMBER to ALWAYS carry a loud whistle, it will be far more productive than yelling or hollering; HELP!

It's good to get survival advice from trained and experienced soldiers. It might just save your life one day. Thanks 👍

I've been lost once as an adult. I was in my early twentys. Hunting. I got into tracking a blood trail and lost my bearing. It was before cell phones. Navigation gear is now a mandatory for me. I think mindset is your most important tool in a situation like this.

I’ve always had a good sense of direction. I’ve (knock on wood) never been lost in the woods and I’ve never aimlessly wondered. I’m always remembering things, we crossed this low gap heading north by the broken oak tree, creek to my west. I’ve been in the woods all my life and this is what I’ve taught myself to not get lost.

Carry a map and compass and it's impossible to be lost. You can even go freely to places that don't have trails and get a less watered down experience with nature than trails give.

I got lost in the backcountry with my girlfriend and we weren’t just like oh we maybe lost we walked miles off trail not knowing and when we did figure it out we were like well we aren’t turning around now. Very inexperienced. I watched that Hazen guy on that survivor show and I remembered him saying if you find a water source follow it and it will lead to people. We walked in this creek for 2 maybe 3 miles and came to an old cabin and we followed a dirt road to a actual area to call for help. Will never forget the feeling of knowing if I didn’t do something I was gonna kill my girlfriend and myself for being stubborn. In that case it worked out very well for us. Thought maybe I should share that. Ps I was crying and freaking out being the manly survivor guy but she got us out . I may have had the knowledge and “idea” to do the water source to civilization but she held us together hiking through the toughest mangled mangrove mess we slugged through to get out.

I feel like the advice to stay put is highly dependent on where you are. Obviously if you know that the last place you know you were was several days away from civilization than staying put is good advice. But if you're out for a hike in a place that you're no more than a few kilometres away from civilization than you'd be stupid to stay put. For instance where I'm from the most isolated place in the entire country is 8kms away from a road. So you'd be guaranteed that by walking in one direction after a half days walk you'd find a road and get picked up and be home for supper.

Do people ever get lost because they *didn't* rely on their GPS? I get lost rather frequently just in the city, and a lot of the time it's because I tried to navigate on my own rather than checking Google for every single turn.
