I’d say add water filtering too could be valuable and life saving (or even just knowing how to boil water in general can also be added to the list). People still drink non moving water not realizing that it is contaminated and drinking river water, though cleaner, still has bacteria and contaminants in it. Boiling and filtering are great survival skills to learn.

I love wild mushrooms but don't have enough knowledge to trust my ability to properly identify and harvest. Suppose I should look for courses. anyone with some recommendations?

When you mention stinging nettle (urtica dioica), you actually showed wood nettle (laportea canadensis).

Huh...

Seems like mordecai DID learn something on that wilderness episode on regular show.

Fire first, if possible. With fire, you can see to build your shelter, in case you're short on daylight. Also, fire helps keep predators at bay.

Bow drill materials:
Cedar, willow, aspen, and birch.
I believe (correct me if I'm wrong), use the harder wood as the drill, and the softer wood as the base. Most importantly, hone your skills before you need them!

Isnt the first priority figuring out what you have and taking an inventory? Like there are so many things you would do before you make a shelter. If you dont have any water your probably want to find a water source first for example.

Unless you're a trained professional, assume every mushroom is poison until proven otherwise

Eat any white mushrooms with bulbous bases and rings around the stems.

Can those shelters keep bears out. Is there a build for that?

welp. First should be the rule of 3. Air, water, then food. 2nd is spot on. The last one applies in the northern and southern hemisphere. Foraging in the Tropics is a Deadly gamble, there is so much normal edible stuff here(fruit, yams, and animals), stick with that, dont gamble. Especially the mushrooms.

Nothing like getting lost in the woods with a kettle for 8 people. You guys want pasta tonight? Who packed the tomato paste? Dave stop making the snow melt! Dave!

Everyone says shelter, but it's not. It's fire then shelter. If you've ever seen naked and afraid, spending time on the shelter is going to result in no fire before nightfall which means no fire. People who follow survivalist techniques need to remember they are following the instructions of a professional survivalist; however, they themselves are not professional survivalists. Shelter is going to require cutting logs and making twine... all something you can do by fire light. Worst case scenario, you can make a makeshift sleeping bag out of a pile of leaves with some branches on top to keep them from blowing away.

But the first survival skill is knowing how to navigate and mark your trail and pay attention so you _don’t _ get lost in the woods.

Don't pull mushrooms out of the ground...cut them so they grow back. If you don't know what you are looking at don't touch it.

Telling people to eat mushrooms in a survival situation is a terrible idea. You’re going to get someone killed.
