Another weird fact about our state: sometimes cargo ships like to knock our bridges into catastrophic collapse. For example, see 2024.

I’m from Hagerstown MD, and I was always confused about this. I can jump in between four states in 20 minutes.

As a Marylander we tend to ignore that entire section

I’m in Frederick. We went from Maryland to Virginia, then West Virginia in around 30 minutes to go white water rafting on the Potomac. My office has staff that live in 4 different states. My favorite: Premium Outlets close by in every direction!

Yes, I live there!😂 That tiny part that's a mile across is called Hancock, and it takes less than 5 min to drive through the whole town.

And someone from Frederick can confirm our state is super goofy

That little mile across patch is where Rt 522, I-70 and I-68 meet in a quaint little town called Hancock.

As someone from Frostburg, I appreciate the screen time.

According to my calculations, Maryland is in that shape because of the Potomac River 🤓👆

This state never gets screen time unless someone is mentioning the president or Baltimore

You will find some of the cutest and most beautiful towns and cities along 68/70 in Western MD. Cumberland, Frostburg, Hancock, Hagerstown, and ESPECIALLY Frederick are all breathtaking places. Frederick id easily say is the most beautiful small city in America

I am from Hancock, Maryland. (Which is the 1 mile you are referring to.) I can confirm.

I'm outside of Hagerstown. There is a town called Hancock where it's 1 mile across. There's a road called 522 that runs north and south. You can get onto it from interstate 70 and take it 1 mile north to PA or go south and immediately cross a long bridge into WV. Stay on 522 south for 15 minutes, and you're in Virginia. There's a town called Berkeley Springs right across the bridge in West Virginia. They actually have a castle there that somebody built. It's also some great scenery and views of the mountains and valleys. Especially on the way past Hancock taking 70 West. There's a chunk of the mountain cut out for the road to go through. It's called Sideling Hill, and it's pretty cool, too. There are two mountains there that have sort of outdated names. 1 is called Polish Mountain. YouTube won't let me type the other. Either way, that little land in Maryland is pretty damn awesome.

As a marylander, that panhandle isnt near the chesapeake bay, so it is irrelevant.

The main reason we have our shape is the bay and its outreaching rivers, the Chesapeake takes up a huge chunk of the state and separates it into a western and eastern shore. Really the only border not defined by water is with Pennsylvania and Delaware which is just the Mason-Dixon Line. And Washington DC, which we donated that land as well as Virginia to become the Capital

I live in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. But I’m 20 miles south of the town of Harpers Ferry.
