Company Claims It's Recreated 'Game of Thrones' Dire Wolves

Dire wolves have been extinct for 10,000 years. Now, a U.S.-based firm called Colossal Biosciences claims it's extracted DNA from ancient dire wolf remains and used that to modify the genome of modern grey wolves. The result, the company says, is the birth of three dire wolf pups, two males and a female. But some experts are skeptical. Ecologist Corey Bradshaw says, "They have slightly genetically modified wolves, maybe. And that's probably the best that you're going to get."

Gotta agree with that expert. They aren't true dire wolves, just genetically modified gray wolves that are superficially similar to dire wolves. Not to mention, with our current understanding of their genome, the dire "wolf" wasn't a true wolf and isn't closely related to them. Dire wolves and gray wolves diverged from each other about 5.7 million years ago, which is the same time frame between Humans and Chimps (currently, it's thought that the closest living relative to dire wolves are African jackals).

This is truly fascinating stuff but concerns about which ecosystems they’ll survive in without causing irreparable harm to other animal kingdoms are more than valid. I’m sure we’re all concerned about what we saw in ‘Jurassic Park’. I’m not trying to be funny, but these animals are bigger and stronger than their modern day counterparts. The thing is as science develops, playing God will become a character flaw of some scientists.
