The Who - My Generation (Live Aid 1985)

Never seen before performance of The Who at Live Aid in Wembley Stadium, London on the 13th July, 1985. A massive technical failure famously led to a breakdown in the TV transmission just as the band was opening their set with "My Generation". Component parts of the performance were discovered amongst the archived b-roll film rushes and edited together by the Trust's production team. The audio was sourced from the cameras' microphones.

Fun fact: The Who are the only band to have performed at Monterey Pop in 1967, Woodstock in 1969, The Isle Of Wight Festival in 1970, Live Aid in 1985, and Live 8 in 2005. Now that is quite a few generations.

34 years I've waited for this. Worth the wait despite the lousy sound.

This is amazing! After 34 years, we finally get to see the Who's full performance of My Generation! I hope to see Pinball Wizard next!

Ironically, this is better picture quality than the official TV broadcast, since these clips were shot on actual analog film.

For all those complaining about the sound quality - You are lucky this sound and video exists at all! The sound and video being broadcast ‘live’ that day were lost, due to a power cut during their performance. The exact moment this happens can be seen at 0:40 seconds into this video when the stadium screen went off. I think it’s very clever how this footage (which was not broadcast ‘live’) has been pieced together to give a complete performance of this song. It’s just a shame this has only now been done and this performance did not appear on the official DVD release.

Rumor has it earthquakes hit hard, volcanoes erupted, thunder struck, tsunamis swept the place while John Entwistle stood there strumming his bass while keeping his cool

Where has this been languishing for all these decades? And why has it turned up only now? Thank you so much!

2021 and I'm 54, Live Aid was 36 years ago, so 1/3 of my life waiting for it to happen and 2/3 of it spent reliving the day.

This is a remarkably well pieced together piece of footage. We had the video recorder going (n long play so all it needed was 2 4 hour tapes) for the whole of live aid Wembley so when the power went out I was gutted. The Who was the band I was really excited to see (I was 13 so wanted to see the legends). Our video recording (that dad transferred to dvd a few years ago) comes back about halfway through Love Reign O'er Me.

Entwistle definition in the dictionary.

"Effortlessly cool, steals the show and let's Pete and Roger do the fancy stuff while sitting there and being the best bassist of all time."

Great job putting this back together. I thought it was lost forever.

I was browsing through this channel and was so surprised to find this, I never thought we'd see a full performance film of this song, even if the audio is the camera audio, it's more than we've ever had. How I would love an official Live Aid "ultimate edition" with all the full performances and better sound (from JFK) and footage overall.

I was somewhat of a lost teenager and The Who meant so much to me. This concert was on the day of our wild and huge party for our government contractor company (Contel) (I worked in the printshop) at a huge location with all kinds of activities and food/drink but I kept heading to my car to listen to the radio broadcast hoping to hear a glimpse of The Who. I had missed The Who’s show near DC during the ‘82 tour because my parents didn’t let me go and it tortured me. I forgave them eventually but It’s Hard.
