Forty-six years later, we finally learn why no bodies from the Edmund Fitzgerald shipwreck were ever found. The tragic sinking in 1975 remains a mystery, with all crew members disappearing without a trace. The ship, a marvel of engineering, sailed into Lake Superior’s dangerous waters on a cold November day but wasn’t prepared for the fierce storm ahead. Why, after all these years, does the lake still keep the secrets of the lost crew, never revealing where their bodies lie? Let’s step into the mystery of this silent and forgotten tragedy.

The story began on a cold November day in nineteen seventy-five. The SS Edmund Fitzgerald was one of the largest ships on the Great Lakes and a great example of engineering at that time. But even with its size and strength, it couldn’t withstand the rough waters of Lake Superior. Captain Ernest McSorley, a sailor with more than forty years of experience, set out with his crew of twenty-nine men. They were carrying twenty-six thousand tons of iron ore pellets to a steel mill near Detroit. The trip started off normally, but as they approached the eastern side, a dangerous storm began to form.

I was a US NAVY sailor. We were running from a typhoon in the Pacific. Somewhere west of Hawaii. The ocean is a violent place. We lost parts of the outside of the ship. The inside was trashed. I was thrown from top rack to slide around the deck with every thing sliding to the port then reverse and going starboard. Metal chairs were following me. Luckily I rolled into a bottom rack and on thru the buldhead. Fun night. One broken leg lots of brushes, cut. The sea is it's own master. Very well the ship just over come and broke somewhere. If the watertight integrity is compromised it can be the end. God Bless all the brave sailors who have not come home.

The song is still haunting to this day. When it come on the radio, its like a wave of emotion comes over me. This was and still is, one of the world's worst maritime disasters. May the families of the lost find peace.

It’s my understanding that when the crew remains were located it was decided by the crews families to leave them together. Also there would have been great risk in trying to recover them

Yes, bodies were discovered around the wreck, that was in 1994 (20 yr old video). One of the images showed a body on the lake floor with a life vest on. Much of that has been scrubbed from the net, a consideration for families. The crew knew their fate.
The wreck site is on the Ont./MI border and protected by Canada law. It's being treated like a memorial and it's doubtful any more dives will be permitted.

The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee
The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead
When the skies of November turn gloomy

I'm convinced after listening to an interview with captain Walton who knew the ship and captain, that they were too close to Caribou shoal, hit bottom and were taking on water. That combined with the storm and being over loaded is what happened. She was too heavy being overloaded and with the extra weight of the water that was pouring in through a Crack in the hull she sat too low in the water with a list to one side. In that condition she did a nose dive into a huge wave and went right to the bottom. It was over in seconds. The investigators know this but there's some kind of cover up going on. If you can find captain Waltons interview, I highly recommend watching it. He will convince you too.

Lake Huron rolls, Superior sings in the rooms of her ice water mansion, old Michigan steams like a young man's dreams, the islands and bays are for sportsmen, and farther below Lake Ontario takes in what Lake Erie can send her, and the iron boats go as the mariners all know, with the gales of November remembered

My Uncle was a worker on a Freighter on Lake Michigan at the time the Fitzgerald went down he said it was one of the worst trips he had been on, on a freighter! He said it rougher than Hell! My Parents got to meet Capt. Anderson in the Eighties, he believes they got to close to the shelf and hit bottom breaking her hull open and that's why she went down so fast!

The wreck is a grave site. It is hallowed ground so treat it as such.

Michigan resident here. You don't fuck with the great lakes. They can be FAR more dangerous than even the open ocean. Beautiful, but deadly.

I didn't visit this site for a general review of what we already knew, or to offend anybody's family. Only to learn about anything new, which won't be around very much longer, for if they had indeed found intact remains after 50 years, doesn't the public have a right to know about it, or view any evidence that may exist ? I was in Seventh Grade at the time of its disappearance. I listened to the reports with my parents as we sat at the kitchen table, always wondered if, they ever will be found. My parents are gone now, never found out, but maybe I could be their eyes.

I remember that storm, I was going to Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The winds, even that far inland, we're unbelievable. The change in temperature in a few hours were dramatic and dark clouds raced across the sky. I can only imagine how bad it as on Lake Superior, with the weather racing along the entire length of Lake Michigan.
