Yes Lee! Mathematicians ignore time! Math can never be "in" the natural world because it is an abstraction which is not bound by time. Infinities and zeros do not exist objectively. That will never change.

But he didn’t invent the airplane he built something like a tube with wings and a tail (like a bird) and it only becomes an airplane by flying because it meets the mathematical formulas ratios etc. for flight.

It is not an airplane before that.

Maths is just our way of putting what is discoverable into a useful kit relative to our perception. It is the useful subsection of the infinite but logical statements. But it existed prior to anyone arranging it.

The plane to the extent that a winged flying object that can direct the transport of objects was discovered.

The label, "plane" and its association to this subset of everything is the "invention".

This is not obviously more than semantics, and cannot see that it is a truly deep question, but would love to see how/if this is more than semantics.

My opinion: Math is our own way of trying to understand most basic truths of all. The universe is not using math. It does not need to do calculations. It is built into the system by nature. So in that sense we are inventing math, since it is a way to describe nature in a format that our brains can better understand. The beauty lies in the fact that we can start with the simple axioms and build into incredible complexity while still true with the universe.

Look (1+1=2) is meerly the discovery of reason and logic but when it comes to types of equations and methods of solving one could say that is inovational. But No it is not a invention

The difference between innovation and invention is vast.

When you are able, in any given moment, to find the laughter, to find the love, your life as you have lived it through the filter of your mind, will be over. To know the self is to see the self, to see the self is to understand the self, to understand the self is to learn, to learn is to teach – this is the obligation set by each student as they walk the path to healing.

Lex's podcast is always dope. Always

Repeating decimals are a great example of our language of math encountering and trying to explain a phenomena that is infinite.

The question itself is ridiculous. Not only was math invented, it has been reinvented several times. Math may be the language of the universe, but fibonacci numerals show us we might as well be speaking Greek.

That was a terrible analogy and the fact SO many people think these two are on to something and so intelligent, has a lot to say about the intelligence of the masses. In other words, say something cool and exciting or against the traditional grain, and they're labelled "geniuses" by those who are passing courses with diversity points instead of merit. Here's reality. The plane was build using mathematics, which describe the world around us. And when I say it was built using mathematics, I'm also saying ALL of the testing and theories before the plane was even considered was already conceived of using mathematics. The language was invented, what the language describes exists and was discovered. You can't get around that. Just because you can build on it doesn't disqualify the foundation. Everything that humans discover can be built on, including biology. Doesn't mean we invented biology.

“Then everything is invented”

“Absolutely”

Its too recurrent and too perfect to be random. When yiu tgink abaout it for long enough the answer shows up

the simplest explanation tends to be the right one : )

Discovered. We have only invented the language aspect of it.

People can't invent anything. The spectrum of possibilities is given by nature.

We discovered math and invented numbers to explain it.

But aliens will know what “pi” is, and how to calculate it, that’s amazing enough for me.
