Honestly the game itself isn't the issue it's the player base. VRChat isn't about progression it's about socialization and adding an in-game economy isn't going to fix that. The mirror dwellers are still going to sit in front of those damn mirrors. The 11 year olds are still going to run around screaming and calling you racial slurs while bragging about their sexual prowess with your mother. The horny teenagers are going to be horny. The desperate incels...are going to be horny and bitter about it. I had a blast in VRC just this last weekend. Why? It was all about who I found myself playing along side. WE made it interesting and fun.

Vrchat is one of those games we’re you need to make/find your own fun, if you go to the same world or do the same thing every time, of course you will get bored. I would prefer players to check out the new or recently updated world to find fun

Every time I go on vrchat, I would just always be standing in the corner of the room while I watch people being weirdos and get scared if I even try to talk to one of them

I do think part of being not boring has to do with the amount of time you spend on VRChat. Even very fun things become boring nor not as exciting as they were originally. When I found myself becoming unexcited to play for a period of time, I took a 3 week break where I decided to play other games I had, and came back feeling fresh and excited. I think it's very healthy to experience this, and highlights the importance of having a balance in games. Even I as a VRChatter most of the time likes to play other games here and there.

Maybe you should just try going into public worlds and talking to people? Like you’re supposed to? Y’know, socializing in the SOCIAL game? VRchat isn’t a game built for progression, it’s not about achieving goals. It’s about meeting and interacting with other players. It’s called vrCHAT because that’s what you’re supposed to do, chat.

I recently revisited VRChat to interview people as part of a social experiment project that I’m working on for college.

I’ve recorded nearly 10 hours of footage, and at least 6 hours of said footage has been people either harassing me for approaching them to start a conversation or instantly blocking me “because I sound white” (yes, multiple people have said that)

For a social game, it’s so weird how 90% of the people in this game hate when people try talking to them. That’s like going to a concert and everyone gets upset and throws a riot when the band starts playing music on the stage.

I've thought about this question a lot. I think there's no obvious *single* answer, but definitely part of it is the following: The player base is extremely segmented as a result of years of allowing the game to be 13+ when it has no business being that way. To expand; the game has no business being anything other than 18+. Not only do adults not want to play with little kids, but vice versa, mostly anyway. The game is about socializing, VR"CHAT", but no actual adult wants to socialize with a child, so you're splitting the player base automatically and creating a minefield that adults have to step through simply to interact with a new person. Could this person be a minor? Do you want to run the risk of interacting with one when you have no intention of that? Not really, no. Also - I don't need to actively raise this point, but I will, anyone who has played VRChat knows that it's simply not an environment for younger people, even IF it's heavily moderated and policed. You know exactly what I mean if you've ever played it.

As a result of the game's segmentation - people now exclude themselves from public worlds, and congregate in private/friend+/friends, whatever. It's simply not worth the risk, or the waste of time, to peruse around in Public worlds. I started playing this game in Jan 2018, and I can tell you back then all I wanted to do was public world hop. It was intoxicating exploring new worlds, meeting cool people, simply exploring a cultural phenomenon. I couldn't get enough of it. But that feeling is lost, much like your video premise states, for most people. This game desperately needs to put itself back into that position of being full of wonder and excitement, because as of right now it's essentially a virtual playground for 1 population (kids) and a private meet up app for the rest (adults or PC VR players, typically). There needs to be common ground for the public player base again to meet and interact, or it becomes a closed loop of continuously decaying fun. But you cannot find that common ground when the public worlds are 90% young kids.

I took a long break from playing, and came back, and took another break, and sometimes I'll play, but it's simply never going to live up to the early days. And that's a shame, because you could easily re-generate that environment again of chaotic fun.

And that's ultimately what I think is missing from this game - Players play a game until their model making algorithm in their mind runs out of ideas or potential new routes to pursue. When you feel like you've had every interaction you could ever have on a game, you start to become bored. It's completely natural, but with VRchat, the boredom comes from poorly optimized social interaction structure, and that's not necessarily a players fault.

I could go on about this topic forever probably, because it's something I've thought about a lot, but thanks for making the video and talking about the topic. This game has limitless potential and it's squandered in the name of increasing the active player #s at all costs, and that's a shame, because I ultimately think it is to the detriment of the experience.

I began VRChat just last December after purchasing the Quest 2. I can say that from my experience, Its harder to enjoy VRChat when their is no friend group or friend to play it with. It gets quit lonely after a while but Ive also heard and seen some dangerous things that go on throughout the platform such as the "Dark Side of VRChat" You tend to start seeing ERP, Online Daters that could be a 14 year old girl with a 20 year old man, the drinking groups, etc. Mirrior dwellers are the main thing that you see in my opinion. I am basically a mirrior dweller without my friend group LOL. But honestly, overall the game dies after a while once you begin playing. You just need to find new experience to keep the fun going.

being able to customize youre "vrchat home" would be game changing fr rather just finding a preset world to make home

I have almost nearly 3000 hours in VRChat as of December 1st - 2023 and i still absolutely love the game. I enjoy exploring the worlds and seeing all the creations. I love meeting new people and generally hang out in public worlds half the time for the somewhat chaotic and crazy nature of it, while the other half i will spend in a nice ASMR world of rain and thunder to help me calm down or relax after a day at work.

I don't see it not "being as fun" or worrying so much about your "rank" as most folks can easily tell when someones there to be a nuisance or to chill and chat.

The biggest issue i see happening to people getting "bored" is mainly due to the fact they aren't willing to even try anymore. Yeah you will meet negative people, trolls, assholes etc. but if you let it get to you, of course you'll have a bad time. Stop worrying about what other people are doing and focus on you and make it what you want.

Its still fun but it mostly depends on what kind of people you are around

Personally for me i liked how simple it was it used to be like you would hop in a world. When your bored and you would explore around and most of the time i would find like another guy or group of guys n girls and they were mainly all adults. Just vibing i would usually go on with my rift. And would occasionally have a drink be a little buzzed. And id find a group of other people who were buzzed. Now its like u hop on and u see a bunch of little kids all wanting to start drama, or like a random ass 28 year old with a kid. Alot of weird ass pedophilia shit. Or just creepy ass adults who u talk to for 30 mins and suddenly they want to be creepy and want to erp with you or want to be in a relationship. As a person whos married and just wants to
Hop on when im bored af its just a bit weird. I eventually got fbt and would dance but. Most people want to sit at a mirror and tbh im not judging but most of em use voicemod or add effects and gain to there voice to make it sound deeper then what it really is

I think your perspective and expectations of VRChat might be a bit off. Not that any ideas you mentioned are bad, but what you want is a metaverse, something like oldschool "Second Life" but in VRChat. Thing is VRChat is really only ever that - a chat in VR. Sure you can play games in there, but all it ever be is just a social hangout place. I never went online and thought even for a second that I need to "rank up" or collect badges and the like, that is simply not the driving point of the app to begin with.

I wouldn't mind either of your ideas as said, but again I don't really believe it needs any of this. I simply believe you get bored because you project a game onto the app, which it never will be and thus you ran out of things to chase. If you maybe take a step back, take a break and embrace it for what it is, then I believe you'll get a different kind of enjoyment out of the app. I clocked in over 1k hours and truly I am bored as well with VRChat, but I know it is more a me issue since I am getting more and more overwhelmed with the amount of kids running and screaming around, and probably the community in general, it really changed for the worse over the years. It's still a great place to hang out with friends and basically just chill. I would love to play a "VR GTA" as you phrased it, but that isn't VRChat.

2:44 would be the best thing ever, like resonite except without having to learn a million things. I would love an rpg or quest eliment to vrchat just to give some fun goals for the day.

bro I'm not going from my 40 hour work week to working in vrchat. I'm here to watch movies, relax, and just hangout

You're right VRChat isn't as fun as it used to be because of all the mirror dwellers and people who get angry at you for saying "hi" (happened to me). Also, Someone replied with another phenomenon that "lower ranking" users get ignored for their rank which is unfortunately a very common trend it puts down users who aren't ranked as "trusted" etc. I miss the good 'ol days with Ugandan Knuckles #MakeVRChatGreatAgain and welcome back Toastette I love your content!❤

Playing games isn't this games main purpose, it's about talking to strangers and meeting people. I've met dozens of really good friends on VRChat and without this game, I would of never had those opportunities. I have really bad anixety when it comes to talking to someone face to face. With this game it made it easier to just talk to people because I knew I can just leave the conversation or leave the world and go back to my comfort zone. Progression isn't needed in a game where it's main soul is to talk with strangers and make new friends, or just to make people laugh with the stuff you create.
