From Billions To Bankruptcy: The Devastating Fall Of GoPro

GoPro was one of the most iconic startups in the world as they dominated the action camera market which exploded in the early 2010s. But, after they IPOed in 2014, it’s only been downhill for the company. They tried becoming a subscription media business which ended up costing way more than it was worth. And they slowly lost their brand presence and innovative lead against cheaper Chinese alternatives like DJI. To make things worse, GoPro had a very embarrassing recall on their drones and their CEO was being paid the highest salary in the world. All of these missteps eventually caught up with GoPro leading to their stock plummeting over 98%. The company has been trying their best to reinvigorate customers and the brand, but GoPro has still just been bleeding towards bankruptcy.

GoPro turned 1, 4 billion in revenue in 2014 of which 170 million was profit yet the CEO took 287 million in pay home that year. No wonder they're struggling, the CEO robbed the company

I returned my GoPro and got a DJI instead. What I disliked about the GoPro was how difficult it was to transfer files from the camera to my Mac. They encourage you to sign up for their subscription, which makes transferring files more complicated than necessary. With DJI, transferring is simple and fast.

Its so sad I've also tried investing in various things that didn't work out as I hoped. Now, I'm looking at ETFs as a more reliable option. What are the best 5 ETFs for a beginner looking to invest a lump sum?

The board should've fired the CEO long time ago

I gave up on GoPro when my GoPro 10 was overheating while I was freezing on a motorbike at -5 degrees trying to record something. I was like this works better as a hand warmer than a camera but way too expensive hand warmer. Their last good camera was 5 black. I still use it and Sessions 5 as a backup but wouldnt even bother wasting my time trying out any of the new models. Got DJI osmo 4 and love it from day 1. Mic connected directly to camera with no expensive adapters, special cases etc and all for reasonable price.

So the CEO's ego was greater than his ability. That flaw in humans has destroyed numerous businesses, music groups, countries, ....

the most important factor for the downfall of GoPro is the incredible advancement in stability of the videos captured by iPhones and Galaxy Phones, So for an average vloggers and average users didn't need GoPro or Gimbals anymore to capture pretty decent videos for personal use or to upload in social media handles

I'm someone who bought each years' new gopro for a few generations and then left because they weren't becoming as good as they always should've been. The crowning part that pointed out their incompetence was their awful, unchangeable file naming. I forget the specifics, but it restarted the filenumber at Video0001 over and over, so footage couldn't be unloaded onto other drives without being renamed, or they'd overwrite each other. It was bizarre. I switched to DJI and the filenames are the date and time, so they can always be unloaded and will immediately be in order. It was a sign that no one at gopro was actually using the cameras. Ever. Not for the first 10 gopros at least.

Not that devastating. If you’re obsolete why should you get love? You’re just a product

The thing I cant stand about GoPro is the overheating/automatic shut down issues that have plagued every generation of gopro's and has never been fixed.

DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro is an absolute GoPro killer in every aspect.

They should have done what DJI and insta360 did.

It’s so sad to see this. I am a GoPro user since their beginning and so disappointed to see their lack of innovation. I am considering quitting.

I can hear the sadness in you voice Hari for GoPro 😢 this was a moving piece. My thoughts are with the Ceo who paid himself $287m.

I used to like GoPro, still have Hero 8 and love it. But my next action camera will be something else. The more I read about newer GoPros, the more I see they have more and more issues.

NGL, I’m a GoPro fanboy. But, I can’t work out what they do all year! They know the competition and it’s like they don’t care. They could easily bring out a camera to beat them all. I honestly think the boss man wants out and it’s easier to lose share value than admit defeat. I’m pretty sure he’s got enough money to get by
