Cartoon characters wore gloves because hands are really hard to draw, especially if you're animating a while cartoon by hand. Drawing gloves made it have to be less detailed.

Actually a fun fact! The reasons a lot off older cartoons have gloves is because of the animators and their budget and timing! Hands are a lot easier to draw and animate when they've been simplified in gloves thus saving time and money!
