Dirac Live for Studio - Digital Room Correction Overview
In this video: I’m reviewing the new studio version of Dirac Live room correction software. I'll walk you through the setup process and features, show you how to use it, discuss what it can and can't fix, and show it in action. So grab your calibrated mic and let’s get into it!
Dirac Research recommends the miniDSP UMIK-1, however, any calibrated mic will work.
Before considering room correction, I strongly recommend you optimize your setup within your budget. Room correction software is the icing on the cake – not a replacement for the cake itself. In an OK room, it can make things that much better, but in a bad room, you’re likely to make your system sound worse.

How It Works
The goal of most room correction software is to create a listening sweet spot where the audio is calibrated in level, with time delays from speaker distances factored in, providing an accurate and even tonal response. It does this by applying individual filters to both channels to counteract the coloration of your monitors within your mixing environment. It also imposes time delays where necessary to ensure sound arrives at the listening position without any destructive interference, by delaying closer monitors to match the timing of those further away. To create filters, Dirac uses a measurement microphone (calibrated to known values) to record multiple measurements within your listening zone against a known test signal and uses that data to deduce how the test signal deviated from the original. From there the software tunes your system by counteracting its natural tendencies. Dirac Live for Studio Dirac Live for Studio is the companies’ first offering to audio professionals seeking more from their existing setup. What Dirac currently lacks in rich features for the masses, it more than makes up for with one major advantage over its nearest competitors, which is the ability to correct problems in the time domain.
