How We Use our Weed Burner - IPM weed management

We did not want to use weed killer chemicals (especially next to the storm drain), so the propane weed torch was a sensible IPM choice for initial weed management in our parking strip. My husband also enjoys using his weed burner! Next step will be the garden makeover for this area, which is part of our garden restoration series.

IPM stands for Integrated Pest Management, and it uses a combination of techniques to reduce biological problems of all kinds: insects, weeds, diseases, and even animal pests. IPM is not a single control method; it’s a series of pest management evaluations, decisions and controls, which includes least-harmful approaches, as well as health, economic, and logistical considerations.

CAUTION: In this video we’ll show you how we use our Weed Dragon propane torch for educational purposes only. PLEASE DO NOT use this information as a substitute for the Manufacturer’s Operating Instructions for your own equipment.

In this video I wore my favorite GLOVES: UPF 50 Garden Gloves by Foxgloves, Inc. I’ve been using these gloves for over 10 years and LOVE everything about them, including the colors and affordable price. Despite constant use, mine last for years and years. They protect my skin against sun damage. The company is USA owned, founded by an amazing woman too!

Thank you for educating people that burning the plant is not required! It the heat that kills them. So many videos showing burning the plants to a crisp. You also show safety precautions. ❤

I appreciate all the safety precaution. I'm on the fence about buying one for myself so I'm of course watching tons of videos. This is the first that bothered to make safety more than an afterthought.

I just got one of these. Thanks for the review. I will do it on a not so dry day and keep the water hose nearby just in case.

We don't have some things in my neck of the woods; basements (cellars) and SNOW SHOVELS, to name a few. We have plenty of mosquitos and weeds, though.
I'm going to buy a weed burner. Never even heard of them before today, but it sounds like it may be a great alternative to hand weeding. And especially to herbicides.
Thanks for posting.

Thank you for the video. If you kill the leaves by destroying the cell structure and stopping the plant from photosynthesizing more food, isn't it essentially the same as plucking the leaves where the roots just grow new leaves? I heard of some people claiming using burners to kill the roots, but I don't see how the heat will penetrate down to the roots under the soil. Your explanation makes more sense, but I don't know if it will prevent the roots from sprouting new leaves.

Thanks for the video, this was very helpful.

If you water heavy prior its much more effective, the water conducts the heat through the soil dramatically better than without, get much higher temps at the roots and for longer.

How quickly do weeds grow back compared to hand weeding?

They used something similar on Iwo Jima, they were quite effective!

*GREAT VIDEO!* Consider using a fresnel lense, and a pillow case fro safety. You can adjust the area burned & the amount of heat by simply moving the lense farther or closer to the target weeds. This can also be used with a mild vinegar (5%) to ensure tinged weeds die off. We use a paint roller to apply the vinegar precisely where we want it, and no worry of corroded o-rings. *Happy weed slaughter!*

I tend to go scorched earth on my weeds but I always have my hose within reach and also a 5lb dry chemical extinguisher 🧯 as well. Better to be extra cautious.
