This film is my second official project for my Art of Video Production class that I take as a freshman at Berkeley High. It is a Public Service Announcement (PSA) that strives to bring attention to a certain issue in our society today, and I chose to focus on disordered eating and excessive exercising habits that are present among many teens these days.
I was inspired to base my video on this topic after struggling with some of these behaviors/habits myself, as well as after noticing calorie counting habits and unnecessary dieting among my family and friends. I realized that so many people struggle with these detrimental thoughts that cause one to have an unhealthy relationship with food, and thus I decided to bring this issue to light to let others know that they are not alone, and that their experiences are seen and there is something we can do about it.
One challenge I faced when creating this project was figuring out how to incorporate special effects in order to convey a zoned out/dizzy feeling, but without going overboard to the point where the special effects took over the message of each scene. I overcame this by spending a lot of time exploring different video and audio effects and just playing around with them until I felt satisfied with each scene. Something new that I tried out was creating a storyboard (a drawn-out map of each shot, each scene) as well as creating an official script. I wish I could have been more concrete and confident with what I put in my storyboard and script, as I ended up not following them that well (improvising + throwing in new ideas a lot) and I feel like the process of creating this film would have been easier if I were more set on how everything would go.
Also, I want to give a special thanks to Juna French (one of my friends as well as one of the actors in this PSA) for agreeing to be part of my project and being super flexible with filming.
