How do you find out which files are using up your hard drive space?

Welcome to the Braintek internet video tutorials. My name’s Greg, owner of Braintek. Today, I am going to show you what utility to use to discover files that are taking up a lot of space on your hard drive.

They have both a professional version and a personal version you can get. The personal version is a little cheaper – $24.95. And I already have it installed. So what we’re going to do is we’re going to open it up and run a check on our C drive. And as you can see, it’s calculating all the different spaces out. It’s got a little hour glass there.

It just finished and right here, it says that the user folder on my drive is taking up half of my C drive. So we’re going to expand that out and we’re going to find out that the admin account that I currently log in with is using up all the space and inside there, there’s two folders. One is the ‘AppData’ and one is ‘Downloads.’ We’re going to take a look at the AppData one. We’re going to notice that 28GB is “Roaming” and “Apple Computer,” “MobileSync,” and “Backups.”

So it looks like the Apple iTunes backups are using a lot of space. And then, under Downloads, we have a large Log file and that’s using up all the space. So we’re just going to double click on that folder and what it does is it takes us right to this folder and we can see all of these old log files that are all fairly large in size. They’re pretty old.

So what we can do is we can just select them all. Hold the shift key on the keyboard and delete them – assuming you don’t need these logs. And then what we can do is we can come back over here and rerun the drive scan and it’ll take a few moments here. And it looks like we have a larger chunk of free space available. Here we have 49GB of free space, 21%, which is not too bad.

So, we’re back in the blue and that’s how we detect where all of our large files are at on our hard drive.

Thank you so much for TreeSize. For a year now I've had disk space issues with my SSD hard drive. TreeSize simplified it incredibly.I've usually just rightclicked->properties etc. to find where all the space is being held but now I got it done in a heartbeat. again, thanks
