The problem with webp is that the technical advantages don't outweigh the entrenchment of png and jpeg. Not just in browser but in how my programs interact with it. Many times I've downloaded images off the internet now then rapidly gotten annoyed as one tool or another failed to represent its existence. Like jpeglarge. But apparently there are browser extensions to convert to png automatically so I'll be trying that.

I absolutely despise webp. Nobody wants it. Nobody can work with it. Chrome just tries to spread it's own stupid format which so many standard image editors like photoshop reject out of hand. And still, because we use chrome, we always have to save images as webp nowadays. -.-

Since both images are available to end users, depending on the browser being used, I think it would have been useful to mention compressing your alt jpg image. A browser trying to load a 16mb jpeg rather than the Webp image, won’t be a nice user experience .

Thank you for explaining this. I was very frustrated when I was told I had to reformat my pictures before I could upload them to my Etsy store for Digital Downloads. I was struggling to try and format them to SVG files but everything was turning out wrong. If you think Webp is better that PDF for digital downloads of photography, please let me know. J. Figueroa

Great video! This plugin made a NEAR-INSTANT improvement to my page loading speeds. Prior to loading this (about an hour previous), I had installed the NitroPack plugin -- only to discover slow loading speeds - due to image format - which you pointed out in a related video. No kidding, Short Pixel AI FIXED my page loading speed problem in dramatic fashion! The subject page went from a score of 94 to 100 within 10 minutes!

Is a webp a modern version of a jpg, gif, or png file? If I save one to my pc can it be viewed offline or does a webp need access to the internet to be viewed?

Almost nothing supports it. When I download a web image I can only get annoyed because most times it doesn't even say it's a webp on the site where it came from. Then, In not sure if it's animated or not. Plus, since I can't use it I have to go and convert it.

You can have under sd resolution about 12sec gif for 25 mb or you can have about 2.5 - 5 min close to full hd animated webp for 25 mb. Not most typical use case but still, to give you an idea of just how stupidly big the difference is brtween gif vs webp.
