GIF is also limited to 256 colors, and there is an unofficial animated format for PNG as well

There is a misconception that jpeg is smaller than png. It's typically smaller, but PNG can be magnitudes smaller than jpeg when given the right image.

It depends on the complexity of the image. Png is a zipped bmp. The fewer colors it has, the more space it will save. Colors are indexed into a dictionary and the grid will contain a reference to the color. So a posterized image of a huge size could be a lot smaller than a jpeg counterpart, all the while it won't lose quality due to antialiasing compression.

tip: Anyone that needs to convert between these formats, instead of using some sketchy website you can use a command line tool called ffmpeg. it has a TON of options but just for converting files all you need to do is `ffmpeg -i <input>.png <output>.webp`, ofc you can replace those file extensions with whichever ones you're using

JPEG XL (JXL) is like WebP feature-wise but with even better compression ratios (much better lossy, better lossless), and it had the added benefit of other programs actually wanting to add support (Adobe, Facebook, Shopify, etc.). This fixed the biggest gripe most people had with WebP: the lack of application support.

Unfortunately, Chromium devs refused to implement it and removed the code from Chromium unceremoniously and without proper explanation. That was despite wide industry support. Really sad.

Technically PNG also supports animation, with APNG

JPEG XL for the win. Redo this video to cover the one codec to rule them all

One thing that nobody talks about is that there’s a website for PNG’s and JPEG’s creation, and they’re still looking retro. Love it.

GIF shows up before JPEG and PNG in the 80s, it's the real OG

GIF has limited colors. That's important

Note that PNGs can also be animated (APNG). However, support for this seems to be limited.

Say what you want about .Wepb benefits, i still get sick seeing that extension when I save a picture.

Really like the way you combined all popular formats and easily and most importantly understandably teach others the differences between them, without overcomplicating it.
