Unrealistic, as a gen z, we can barely afford groceries, forget buying a car! 😂

I would always be invited to go to the dealership with my dad. My dad would give them a reasonable offer, say he doesn’t have time to deal with them jerking him around for hours, and walk out. Without fail, every time the salesman would chase him down in the parking lot, invite him back in, to which he would give them his email and tell them to send him the paperwork to sign. He would get the paperwork back same day and pickup the car later that day. 😅

The last time someone tried to haggle with my grandad, he just kept increasing the price until they left

Edit: due to some of the replies below I feel I need to give some context on what he was selling. He was selling some spare tyres that had never been used. He tested them and they were all up to spec but he took 25% off anyway as he still felt they were second hand.

The guy im talking about tried to haggle my grandad down to 75% off. So my Grandad just kept increasing the price until he left. He did end up selling them for exactly what he wanted two days later anyway to a family friend.

Salesman told me that ford was never gonna put a V8 in the raptor again, 3 months after it leaked online. 6 months later the raptor R was announced.
I also saw pics of the bronco a year before the official first look, after the 2017 renderings.

The silent generation should be in one of those old folks bus talking to the driver about when he bought a car.

I'm gen Z and bought my first car for 800. It is a project, but i bought my first running car for 1500. You might ask what theu are, 800 is a 1967 Pontiac Catalina, 1500 is a 1965 Oldsmobile Cutlass.

Every car I'll ever own will be secondhand, way more fun and cheaper

My response to the boomer: "Well, sir, a lot can change in 50 years. Inflation, supply, and demand. But you probably don't care about that. You think just because you're several decades older than me and you think that alone warrants respect. It doesn't, if you treat me like garbage, I'll treat you the same. So, $50, 000 or you can look for something cheaper or you can just leave."

The boomer: "....Gobbless, " and then he leaves

Haggling needs to end. It’s literally just a waste of everyone’s time. And anecdotally I’ve seen dealerships Jack up interest on lower cost cars so they still get their cut either way

My dad is a boomer and I'm a millennial, we actually tag team going to the dealership because he will start giving them a hard time and after a few minutes ill cut in and ask the dealer to meet us halfway (to what my dad is haggling for) unless the dealer wants to spend another hour dealing with my dad.

Works every. Time.

I have never had luck negotiating, even when I could find similar cars further away for less. Walking didn't work, showing up at the end of the month didn't work, the only thing that sort of works is getting a pre purchase inspection and having them cut the price to cover any repairs, or emailing and asking for the best out the door price - but that still might only cut $800 off the price, barely covering taxes.

Anyone that buys a car without driving it first is completely insane
