Israel and Iran could 'attack each other's nuclear facilities' | Middle East Crisis

Former foreign secretary Lord Owen has warned that tension in the Middle East could escalate to a nuclear confrontation.

Lord Owen, who was foreign secretary between 1977-1979, said both Israel and Iran have indicated to each other "that their nuclear weapons are this time not off the agenda. They've taken action that indicates that the next attack could be on each other's nuclear weapons".

Israel has never formally admitted to being a nuclear power, while Iran is believed to be near to the "breakout" moment where it could produce a bomb if it wanted to, the US said last month.

The world is waiting to see how Iran, and its Lebanese proxy Hezbollah, will retaliate to the killing of the Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran and a Hezbollah commander in Beirut.

Lord Owen said Israel should "hesitate" before reacting to any Iranian attack, adding that the Israeli government had lost a lot of international good will following its response in Gaza to the 7 October Hamas attacks, which had caused "more than the raising of eyebrows among friends and allies".

Iran does not have nuclear weapons - it has a nuclear program, which Russia is aiding it to develop. Israel is the one with nuclear weapons, provided by the USA.
