We saw something similar this in Rugby Union. Big rugby countries used to just cap the talent from, say, Fiji/Samoa/Tonga and then never play them again. This restricted these smaller nations from producing a really good Team of their own. Now they've changed the laws to allow players who haven't been capped for a certain number of years to play for their original countries and a number of players have taken advantage of that, leading to much more competitive smaller nations. It's only good for the sport. It prevents the big attractive powerhouse nations nicking everyone and making them illegible to play for other nations. Think you have to govern it with some really good strong rules and regulations to prevent players just switching around all the time. Maybe 1 switch per individual.

Love O Neill as a pundit, the epitome of been there done it, Euro Cups tick, League title tick, Managed clubs to trophies tick, managed internationally tick....really makes the majority of talk sport (excluding Jordan, White, McCoist) pale in comparison.

Declan Rice played for Ireland all through the youth ranks and made three senior appearances in friendlies for Ireland before he switched allegiance to the country of his birth England.

I think it’s a good thing, otherwise big nations can just give players meaningless caps to stop them playing for someone else even though they may not really see them as a long term selection certainty

Even as a Northern Ireland fan, I have to admit that we need to focus on developing our own when possible as opposed to taking rejects from GB. It defeats the purpose and takes away the pride that you should feel when representing the country you were born and grew up in.

Can Ireland have Jack Grealish back in that case please??

He’s only doing it because Scotland are starting to arrive at tournaments!

Arteta nearly played for England and never won a cap at senior level but it’s hardly surprising given what he was up against.

Countries with deeper pools of talent have more competition and that’s the way it goes.

I see you’ve turned the comments off when it comes to the Spanish bloke resigning over that kiss …. You don’t want to see the people stick up for him then ?

Problem is international FAs scouting kids young. Kids get more kudos being a schoolboy international affiliate and clubs get better reps with kids being internationals.
The problem is making kids choose at 14/15 what country they eant to represent.

Scott McTominay is English and happily plays for Scotland. He's happy, the Scotland supporters are happy.

Where's the issue in all this?

Decision on country to play should be with the players. Many have parents of different countries and thus influence their upbringing.

Someone like Declan Rice was born in uk but has irish roots. Thus he's prob happy to play in either team but does have preference for england because thats where he was raised.

If Barnes couldnt get into england team but rejects scotland anyway, pundits will say he is disrespecting his family/roots.

Che Adams was asked how he felt to represent Scotland. He answered with, it was a great opportunity to play in the Euros.

Half the French National team opted for France for financial reasons, John Barnes recently told Simon he played his whole England career without feeling English. It’s shameful behaviour.

Fine with Rice and Grealish doing it but as soon as it’s the other way about it’s a problem 😂😂😂.

My son has a Welsh dad, a Taiwanese mum, and has grown up in Singapore. It's perfectly possible to have affections for more than one country. I have no issues with people swapping countries, as long as they care about the country and give their all.

Your first senior friendly should declare your permanent nationality.

It's wrong big nations to use players and stop small countries having top players playing for them.

People can change nationality in real life, why not football? If you've lived in the UK for 5 years and passed a test, you're a British citizen. International football should have as fluid a concept of nationality as states do. A player should be allowed to play for as many different nations as they have passports, but obviously only 1 nation a tournament.

If Rice would have remained Irish then it would have saved Arsenal about £60m as he would have cost his actual worth as opposed to the English tax Arsenal ended up paying😂
