I just want to point out that LIDAR doesnt necessarily have to be flown, thats just one example of how it can be used. It can be used underground as well.

So, do the beams reflect back and we measure how long it took them to return and that’s how we know how far they went? I’ve wondered about this for a while because I believe lidar is also used for driver assist tech, right? Somehow it knows how far away the car in front of me is.

I did self drive engineering specialization... and they are amazing. But has some limitation. Nowadays ipads come with them too. At least in the car versions that we used they were limited to 200m, they could be stronger, but them they would get expesive and out of the safe to humans range i believe. It was a long time ago that i've studied them.

LiDAR is real fascinating stuff! It’s found so many ancient structures all over the world over the past 10 years . The ones found in Latin America really piqued my interest

This starts off by mentioning radar, but then never actually explains the difference between that and LiDAR. They're both light of course, just at difference frequencies. LiDAR is also generally designed as a tool for precise distance measurement, but doesn't detect things like movement (which radar does by detecting a change in the *frequency* of the signal that bounces back, vs only the time it takes which gives the distance).

I have a sand pit that sand is mined from. There are topical surface protrutions that have been developed by irregularities 30-50 ft. Beneath the surface. I.e. old trees/logs

I ride a motorbike. And the speed dial of one of them was spot on, not 10% extra. A pre series bike, that's why. So, when there was a radar speed indicator (without a camera) in my street, I tested it. I rode 30 km/h and the radar said: 60 SPEEDING 😮. That radar receiver must have seen the top of my tire, because that is the only thing moving at exactly double the speed. A bit more, maybe, but that is details. Tires are not perfect circles. However, I'm glad this radar thing did not send a fine. Allthough, bikes have no front license plate, they'd just see a bike in the picture. Going HALF the speed, but how would they know?

As of May 2024, only iPhones have LiDAR (light detection and ranging) technology, which uses invisible lasers to measure the distance and depth of objects. Samsung also had a model that had the sensor.

My last car had lidar. It's so much better than the standard sonar cars these days have. If I buy another, I will definitely make sure it has a lidar system.
