How Iran strapped SAMs to F-14 Tomcats

During the Iran-Iraq War, the F-14 was used by Iran to control the air. However a shortage of air to air missiles meant that Iranian engineers had to turn to the only other alternative they could find; Raytheon HAWK surface to air missiles. They would attempt to fire these from the Tomcats.

Iranian pilots were the best US trained fighter jet pilots in 70ies - 80ies who earned a lot of military respect during the 8 years Iran/Iraq war.

You should make a video about "Operation H3"
Considered as the greatest aviation operation in history also done by Iranian pilots.

I love the fact that there seems to be a deeply ingrained need in fighter pilots to wear the most badass shades available to them irrespective of nation or background.

Finally, a program that calls it like it was: "Iraq attacked Iran" and "externive use of chemical weapons by Iraq." Thank you.

Incredible story. It's pretty neat how they overcame the engineering challenges of the hawk missile's rader incompatibility and damage to the air-frame by dropping it first and syncing the two systems radars together. Pretty neat.

Iranian pilots fought very bravely and professionally. When I read about their operations on the Internet, I am really surprised. During the eight years of war, Saddam Hussein had to rebuild his air force three times, while no country provided Iran with aircraft or even parts. He didn't even give spare parts for the plane! But Saddam Hussein bought advanced MiGs and Mirages. The American AWACS were giving information to the Iraqi army in a completely public manner. However, Iranian pilots were flying until the last day of the war. They destroyed more than four hundred types of Iraqi aircraft inside Iran and Iraq and captured more than 150 attack helicopters of the Russian military.

If it wasn't for the pure dedication, bravery and skill of these Iranian airforce pilots the outcome of that treacherous war combined with all the imposed sanctions would have been very different. I salute these great men.

A missing thing here is Adeli engagement with a Mig-29 in 1988, where he hit the Mig with Sedjil and got hit by the Mig, yet he managed to RTB in Hamedan without nose! But since F-14 presence there was super concerning, he was forced to bring that partially hit F-14 to its actual base, at night with NO LIGHT on the runway and on the aircraft!

The split between Iran and the United States was one of the greatest political tragedies for both peoples, but the inheritors of the Iranian F14's used them well and respected them.
