Thank you for this. As far as preventing the door from being lifted out of the track, I measured the gap at the top edge of the door (~.5") and bought a wooden dowel of that diameter at the hardware store for $2.50 for 4'. Slide the dowel into the gap between the top of the door and the track. Of course I also have a dowel in the bottom track. The reason I mention the dowel, which does the same as the screw solution you mention, is that some people may not have the tools to do the screw method, or maybe don't want to put a hole in the track.

Your demo about home security has shown me how ignorant I have been for the last 89 years, one of my rental units has one of those doors, I thought that I have it secured very good, only to find out from you how to secure the door. We do not take you for granted, we appresiate you very much. Thanks my friend
God bless you, protect6 you and prosper you and your family.

Blinds are another method of protection. Don't let them see into your home and look for things to take. Lots of people advertise their expensive belongings for the world to see.

This is great! Thanks for showing me how to break in to my house when my wife locks me out! Now I can sleep on the couch instead of the patio furniture. Cheers!

Lots of great tips! Just a note on the one way film, at night the view is the other way around from outside to inside but not inside to out. Also install a video cam with lights and siren outside and use a solar panel to keep the batteries charged if it's possible in that location. I have these and once they start filming the recording is stored on the internet so even if the cam is destroyed the images are safe.

Great video. Bandits are lazy so doing anything to make it harder for them usually helps. Yes they can just smash the glass but that makes a lot of noise risking detection so it’s not preferred. A Live monitored security camera that lets them know they’ve been detected is another excellent tool. Having just a video camera usually just records the crime showing you what you already know. Balance deterrance with evidence gatheing for best success.

I lived in an apartment with a sliding glass door for several years and looking back, I'm surprised no one broke through it to break in. Back then, we used to have a wooden stick in the gap to keep the door from being slid. Still, from what I have seen in footage, burglars usually just break the glass.

I was also a professional security consultant. I like your ideas. If you don't mind let me offer you additional remedies. What you introduced are preventative measures which is great! Now let's remind everyone that there are very affordable alarm companies out there that will actually give you an alarm at no cost provided you have it monitored. Most companies now charge about $29.99 per month in addition to implementing your methods! This is a great way to protect your home. I will also add that when installing an alarm system ask the sales representative about installing an external siren ( outside of home ) and a strobe light . The purpose of these 2 additional pieces of equipment will ensure that everyone down the block will know that someone is breaking in or trying to break in your home. The strobe light will give anyone a visual whose home is being compromised. For example an intruder, medical emergency and so on

If your door has wheels on the top then you can simply tighten the wheel adjustment bolt (located in that hole at each end of the door) to raise the wheels until they touch the top of the door frame. That eliminates the gap without having to put all those wood screws into your door frame.

One of the easiest and most effective is a dowel/pin through the frame of the sliding and into the fixed door. Do it at the top (where there's no glass) in the middle of the opening where the two doors overlap. I made nice ones for my mom with an aluminum rod from Home Depot and a nice wooden door pull (also from HD). Drill a hole all through the inside door and the inside side of the outside door (NOT ALL THE WAY TO THE OUTSIDE). Put the pin through and there's no way to slide the door or pick it up with a crowbar or suction pads because now the two doors are locked together. Don't do the screws in the top frame as you'll pierce the water barrier and possibly allow water in around the door. Don't do that.

My second house was on the edge of a rough neighborhood. Property prices were low because of this. Spent a fair amount of money to do some upgrades. One of these was on the patio doors, we installed a Hurricane shutter that could be closed at night or if we were out at work. The windows when shut had metal swing clips that locked the window down.

Thank you so much. I live alone and it can be scary. My slider is really heavy. I put a 1x2 inch board in the track. I feel much safer.

When we lived in a house with a sliding glass door, we just put a sturdy, square stick to jam the door shut. It always worked great...and always had a dog. If anyone was able to get past all that, they would have to face my husband and 2 sons with the 'great equalizer.'

A good substitute for a stick is the white PVC pipe used for sprinklers. Cheap and easy to cut. If they are cut slightly long, they can be wedged in to make the locking stronger. Like the screws over the top keeping the door from lifting.
