The BYD Seal AWD Excellence - Better than a Tesla?

The BYD brand seems to have appeared from nowhere and is very suddenly taking on brands such as Tesla in the EV market. But the truth is, as a brand, BYD isn't actually that new, and chances are you have owned something with BYD technology inside of it.

The BYD Seal is the 3rd car to launch from the brand in the UK, but in the next year or two, we're likely to see a lot more. So, who is BYD? What to BYD make? Is BYD better than Tesla? In this video, John Marcar will be revealing all.

You know what, I have one and it drives great. It is very nicely finished, super quiet in the cabin, the audio, the interior lights that go along with the music, and the quality of the driving itself is great! Everyone who rides my seal for the first time is really amazed at the quality and driving characteristics. Anyone who still comments negatively about this car has probably never sat and driven in one...

Byd isn't gunning for tesla. They are going after Toyota. And Toyota are worried.

The trend is China is intelligent driving environment focuses on using artificial intelligence to anticipate what occupants want to do or prevent occupants from potential harms. BYD is in entry level segment based on pricing, styling and performance so the level of automation and intelligence reflect so. Blade battery is LFP which is not as efficient as Tesla but cheaper and it doesn’t catch fire even punctured. BTW, that glass ceiling can change to darker color. There is another contender to Seal is Geely Galaxy series, which about Tesla S size and performance but less than half the price.

Had my Seal for 4 months and it is by far the best car I have owned. It drives superb has outstanding performance is comfortable and very nicely finished inside. I charge it from my solar panels but even if I use grid electricity here in Thailand per mile costs are for a 150 mpg vehicle. One feature never mentioned in your video is the Vehicle to load feature....I wired my house 18000 BTU air con so I can isolate it from the grid when required and run it from 5 pm to 8 am from my BYD using about 10 kwh of power which is recharged in the morning from solar. So far it has saved me a lot of cash and and intend keeping for many years. Also at £33000... far cheaper than the UK it is a bargain.

An excellent car, I have the Premium version and absolutely love it but then again I paid 32k here in Thailand, in the uk I would have paid 45.5k !

Saw one on display at Gridserve, Norwich.

Was much better looking in the flesh than pictures / vids suggest. Was in a fab colour too.

Great Video. Loved the bit with Luke and Henry 😂. Will be getting one ordered next week. My main concern will be how well they do the updates to the software. With so many models coming I hope they offer many years of updates. Especially when they are clearly not as tuned as the Tesla software. This is where they need to close the gap in my opinion.
Looking forward to recreating the performance tests with my family.

Upgraded from an ATTO3 which is a great family SUV to the twin motor Seal. Couldn't resist the extra power. Beats the Tesla by a mile in cabin comfort but similar in performence. Love the headup. and not having to take the eyes off the road to monitor speed unlikeTesla's everything on the screen including wipers and gear shift.

BYD cost cheaper than Tesla in Australia though. The reason BYD cost more than Tesla we all know why. Blame it to your own EU UNION.

I want this car. I love the looks, comfort, power and handling. I just wish it wasn't insurance group 50D. I'm hoping that comes down a bit before I'm ready to buy in November; maybe when they have a bit more data against it. The EV6 GT as a comparison, which is more expensive, more powerful and faster both to 60 & top end is only group 45 ☹

Interesting review thank you. I'm nearing the end of my Tesla Model 3 LR lease and looking to buy a replacement outright. I've had the Model 3 for over 3 years and it's been so easy to live with so the natural inclination is to replace with the new Model 3. However, the next car will be with me a long time (into retirement) so I need to get it right. There's a couple of wiggly things about the Model 3 which means I will want to challenge myself by trying a few alternatives. I might seem a bit picky here . . . 1) no Apple Car Play, 2) crap auto wipers, 3) No parking sensors, 4) no stalks, 5) no radar for cruise (need to see how well it manages with cameras), 6) Elon Musk. BUT there are some things I love a) the sound system (I couldn't trade that down for anything), b) the simplicity of the interface, c) efficiency, d) charge rate, e) party trick performance, f) it just works!
So at this £50k-ish price point, what else is there with a decent range, performance and practicality? Really the BYD Seal is one of the few options to consider to I'll have to test one. I know it has Apple Car play [tick], great performance [tick], practicality [tick] but what about everything else? Any other conclusions from you? What's the UI like? Is the sound system much worse than the Model 3? Charge rate is a bit slow I believe? I think my ideal car would be a Model 3 LR but with the issues 1 - 5 sorted. I don't think my ideal car exists at this price point and I'd need to add a lot to the budget to get close!

Not just stuff?? BYD have been making cars since 2003 the hybrid and some full electric cars at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing were BYD. they do make basically everything. Parts in any device you own sometimes of the parts is 100% made by BYD., and this has been happening for at least 40years.

If you are in Australia, the price of Seal is even better in comparison with Tesla Model 3. Though Tesla just reduced the price of Model 3 by AUD $4000 a few days ago, so the prices are very similar now.

WHY IS THE CAR TAXED SO MUCH ITS MUCH CHEAPER IN AUSTRALIA AND SELLS WELL BUT THE EU AND THE BRITSH GOVERMENT TAXES ARE SO HIGH.

The Seal is very compelling, but I'd still pick the Model 3. The lack of boot (and frunk) space in the Seal is just a deal breaker. (I compared them in person and M3's is just on another level.)
And I can't ignore the huge part of the supercharger network still exclusive to Teslas where I live, where most 3rd party chargers max out at 50kw
