I cringed when I saw him let the caliper hang by the rubber brake line.

and next time: how to change ripped off brake hoses by hanging calipers on them....

I think it's a riot that so many people are upset by the caliper. Obviously, you know about that, and were in a hurry. I am facing my first brake job, and love the simple approach you take. It keeps me from scaring myself out of working on the car. I haven't been to a mechanic in five years now, and my crappy little Chevy is in great shape, such as it is. Thanks for what you do.

I haven't had to deal of that type of drum e-brake. Looks simple enough. I just fixed the hand e-brake on my 99 Mustang the previous owners didn't do a lot of basic maintenance on. In my case all it need was some Blaster penetrating oil to clean up the mechanical working under the console then some Blaster lube for it to start catching the teeth on the rotating piece connected to the e-brake cable. It was basically just dirty and gummed up. Got lucky. Looks like it had been that way for a very long time because there is tons of adjustment left - like new.

And then you can drive away to find out that you have no brakes at all, due to a torn brake line caused by a hanging caliper like this one. Then you can check truly check if your emergency brakes actually work. And hopefully manage to stop your car, without causing an accident.

Hate to say it because I gotten great tips From you Scotty, but seeing that caliper hang like that reminded me why I don't trust absolutely anyone to work on my cars. Only way I let someone work in my cars is if there's something majorly wrong and I don't have a clue how to fix it such as engine internals.

I'm a fan of your no nonsense approach Scotty, I am a fellow mechanic myself. I am not going to criticize you for dangling the caliper by the line, but for other people out there, the correct procedure is to get a piece of bailing wire, or anything to support the caliper. A common symptom of a broken flexible line to the caliper is the brakes sticking (not releasing) due to the line being broken on the inside from being damaged internally (not visible). Scotty is a professional mechanic, if he did damage someones vehicle on accident, they returned noticing a problem since they brought it to him, he would own up and fix his mistake.
