Can You REALLY Treat SIBO With Your Diet?

Embarking on a "SIBO diet" is one of the most common ways people try to treat the condition. And while there are many to choose from (low FODMAP, SCD, bi-phasic, low fermentation, elemental, and recently carnivore), there is hardly any research/evidence that these diets legitimately treat or cure SIBO. Rather, they are most likely providing a bandaid-like effect. In this video, I discuss two recent papers that explore the question: can we really treat SIBO with diet/nutrition alone?

Just wanted to say thank you (!) for making all this knowledge publicly available, especially in this age of emergent and misunderstood sickness

You are a legend, to many :)

I've struggled with sibo for years until I realized the root cause was my low stomach acid which was throwing everything off. Soon as I added some betaine HCL and got my acid back up, sibo cleared.

what I've learned from the diet rollercoaster that bacteria is great at adapting. every intervention started with a honeymoon phase and then I arrived where I started off. not to mention being worse than before because every time I tolerated less foods than before.

Where is the SIBO video that tells us how to actually solve the problem?

Thannnnk you! My sibo got much worse (and turned into sulfur!) when I went low fodmap/ high meat/high fat, the more I cut out the worse it got! Sulfur sibo got better interesting when I started NAC and Glutathione! I think all that extra fat and protein increased LPS + ammonia from undigested protein and that took its tool on my body's detox pathways. Still working on it, if only I HAD found you when I first started this 2 years ago rather than 6 months ago. Still I have hope though, this isn't as tough to treat as everyone makes out its just badly treated with restrictive diets and kill protocols! You're totally right its about the foundations + wholistic care. Can't believe how quick your releasing videos after your surgery!

Hey I’ve listened to like 20 of your “IBS freedom” podcasts and you’ve given me so much hope that I can one day feel normal again! I have been experiencing extreme brain fog and fatigue that really affects my ability to most daily tasks, I haven’t seen you talk about this yet but I would LOVE to hear your thoughts ❤

The bit around 4:13 helps me understand why doing low-fodmap was great for helping me understand which foods trigger the worst symptoms....but once I got frustrated eating that diet and went back on the "eff it" train things have only gotten worse.

I was diagnosed with SIBO in 2014. In addition to my SIBO results, I was also diagnosed with mono and a lengthy list of food sensitivities (gluten, eggs, dairy, corn, pineapple, and yeast). At first, my doctor had me follow a low carbohydrate diet for a few months while also eliminating my food sensitivities. I felt better, and I had a bit more energy. Shortly after, I adopted a whole foods plant-based diet for health reasons and ate salmon weekly for 6 months (while still eliminating my food sensitivities in my diet). I felt even better, my bowel movements became regular and my energy levels increased dramatically. Following the 6 months, I was convinced that I was better off not consuming any animal products and for ethical reasons I decided to stop eating salmon too. For the last 7.5 years, I have enjoyed a consistently healthy life and I felt like I healed from SIBO by following a whole food plant-based diet. Recently, I have entered a new chapter in my life and my stress levels have increased. Before I was aware of my increased stress I felt a shift in my health. I have since been able to acknowledge my newly increased levels of stress and have been prioritizing sleep and exercise which has helped a ton. After a lot of internal turmoil I am now open to shifting my diet. I look forward to future studies that are grounded in science to help me truly heal from SIBO once and for all. Best of luck to everyone on their healing journey.

And now the million-dollar question: can you REALLY treat SIBO with the high FODMAP diet AND without antibiotics/antimicrobial herbs ? (Provided, of course, that we treat the cause of the SIBO, restore motility and repair the vagus nerve, manage stress, etc.)

Thank you, my Queen - you're definitely the best source of information on this disease!

Greetings from France

This might be silly question, i'm new to all this. You said we need to look back, not to just bandage, go back to see what gets us to this place. Im curious what are the places to look, i wanna test everything that needs to be tested and im a bit tired to just hear from doctors "it's the stress" cause what if it isn't and they aren't trying with me and i don't know how to try on my own to find the cause. I heard some people have low acid levels, or parasite etc. What are the things that i can test and look into? (Thank you sorry for English)

I was diagnosed with IBS last year, until about a month ago, my symptoms were bothersome, but not severely interupting my life. I am very health conscious and eat nutritiously... I began a low FODMAP diet about 2 weeks ago and the only thing that has changed is that my bloating is slightly better and a strange, sulfurous odor disappeared. I still have bathroom issues and gas. My primary care doctor basically ignored me and I already have an appointment with a gastroenterologist next week! I am 59 and exercise and drink plenty of water... I also strarted getting stomach cramps and indigestion.

Great video thank you again. I tried reintroducing cruciferous vegetables and I got raging tinnitus. Would love to see a video on that.
