A simple break down of a classic 90's collect-a-thon.

This was uploaded to my other channel, but I decided to delete that channel and bring all my videos together.

Love this game to death and I've 101% it a couple times, but there is no agony greater than having to comb the entire level looking for the last five bananas that you somehow missed and then it turns out they're sitting on top of a post in the middle of bumfuck nowhere that only Diddy can get to with the fucking jetpack

this is so well explained, you should be a war strategist

honestly I'd watch an entire series of just videos that genuinely look at the gameloops of various games and try mapping them out in this format. It's a great exercise in comprehending the game design loops and intentions of various games and is well worth seeing how different games approached it.

I noticed that the final diagram looked like a giant Donkey Kong Head.

Phenomenal editing, pacing, structure, and vector designs. The amount of work put into this is astounding!

While now I definitely see and feel the flaws in this game, I do think it's been getting a bit over critized recently with the good things being ignored. I want to replay it now, I LOVED this game as a kid and definitely still has a special little place near my lungs.

One of the games that's worth getting a guide book for...

FYI, having this much to do is what made the game for me. Sure Gloomy Galleon was a nightmare level, and Beaver Bother was a nightmare mini-game, but the rest of the game, and the endings, made up for it.

I unironically want a "parody" game that basically was inspired by DK64 in the worst way possible and turn up the amount of collectiables to the extremes. The twist being though it actually make sense and just a massive game that doesn't waste your time as much as just give you a ton of content to do. Like imagine DK64 but in a universe where the devs decided backtracking was no fun and if you were skilled and knowledgeable enough you were able to get everything in a single clean run-through. Kinda like how Rayman games did it or Crash if you knew what to do and remember where the hidden crates are. I feel DK64 can honestly be a great game if it was playtested to see if it was even fun in the first place. In their defense the logic back in the day is you might only get like 1 new game around every 6 months if not less so backtracking is a feature and not a waste of time. Backtracking was just another word for exploring, it only nowadays where we have options does being fun become a massive factor in if people will even buy the game in the first place.

Now I remember how much of a clusterfricc of a game this was.

Donkey Kong 64 was one of those games that was fun to beat, but something akin to a punishment to 101%. I hope whoever thought up Beaver Bother no longer has a job making minigames.

you dont need to collect every blueprint to unlock the final level. they only increase the time limit you have in that level.

Unjustified insane complexity, but I still love it. I definitely accept my subjectivity, though, this game is not for everyone (or maybe anyone).

I actually like the collecting in this game. I've 101% completed it twice and it's my favorite n64 game along with ocarina.

I tried to beat this game on my aunt's N64 as a kid but always got frustrated after a certain point. This, uh... This helps to explain why I always went back to Mario Kart 64 instead.

The DK rap was good though, and I loved the soundtrack.

I love the out-of-breath at the end due to the long winded description. Very well done.

This would normally confuse me but since I’ve played this game so many times I understand everything. Definitely one of those games that went really far with the amount of collectibles a single game can have.

So many steps, no wonder I never finished the game as a kid.
