Root Cellar 2023 And Freezers. Ready For Winter

Decided to do a walk around the root cellar today that some have been asking for. We are doing less canning and more freezing so now the grains have been moved in there. Also a look in the freezers that are stuffed and quick look at some updates I am doing to the basement canning and potting area to clean that up so I can use it for videos.

Your root cellar is just beautiful. You guys always are so neat, organized and stocked. Have a happy veterans day weekend!😊🇺🇲 Do you have a rule of thumb on how long you might let your nonperishables go past the best by date? Thank you.

Hi 👋, URHC, That looks amazing, you are obviously very well organised, very impressive, it looks like you’ve got enough food to keep you going for many years, I am hoping to start this week making stilton and broccoli soup, for the winter, beef, bourguignon, not sure if I spelt that right, I normally make anywhere between 10 to 15 portions, then freeze it, and nearly every year I get given a side of venison, so I normally make some venison stew, burgers, and steaks, I do like your rack shelving that looks very good, and your prep area looks very good as well, well laid out, you’re both keep safe now, look forward to seeing some more yummy food, Phil from the moulin France.

Your kitchen project turned out nice. I can't show it to the wife yet or she will want one.😂

Hi Ed. I don't think neither of you are going to go hungry for quite some time. Sorry to hear that you had some issues with your last eye surgery. Hope you both have completely recovered. from your previous health issues. All the best to you both.

I have a home generator that kicks on when the electricity goes off so no worries. It has been worth it's weight in gold up here.

Your red potatoes are sprouting because of their proximity to the garlic & onions. Try putting all the onions & garlic on one side of the pantry & potatoes on the other so the off gassing from the onions doesn’t ruin all the hard work you put into growing your potatoes. Also, I’d get the sweet potatoes out of the plastic bag asap so they don’t start to rot. Beautiful pantry😊

Deliciously organized. I have crates full of Alisha Craig onions cured, but i am never going to keep them over winter because I just don't have your kind of climate control in that beautiful root cellar. Cellar is too warm from the oil burner. Sheds are way too cold. That's a dream kitchen set-up. Wow. I'm impressed. I actually have that big stainless sink in my kitchen and I love it. Oh where is your dog bathing set-up? I don't see one. Haha. Don't forget to put in an elevated dog bathing tub net, complete with spray nozzle. 🐶

I love the way you have your cellar set up. Can't do that with mine. Mine is a dirt floor for most of it and damp. I end up using an extra fridge in my pantry to stove things like the potatoes and onions. Not ideal but not bad. Besides the 2 refrigerator freezers, I have a big chest freezer and an upright. They are all full. I won't ever starve! LOL!

Awesome job! Love it! You mentioned the sink is from Costco but where are the shelves and backsplash from?

Awesome set up. Which of the grains does your wife and you, enjoy baking and eating the most? Freezing is so handy but things get lost in freezers. You are set up for many delicious home cooked meals.

I would think that you have a backup generator available in case of power outages. You must be setting on a ton of cash to buy all that equipment and supplies. I like the cellar layout.

You are supposed to put the bottom shelf on the metal shelves as close to the ground as possible. That's how it keeps the legs/side poles straight and strengthens the overall unit.
I had my bottom shelves up like you do and eventually the side poles collapsed, breaking most of my jars of food.
I contacted the company and was told that the bottom shelf MUST be as low as possible.
