My experiences with OCD and PANDAS | Anna Wurzer | TEDxCarrollCollege

Показать описание
At the age of five, Anna had strep throat, a common infection that may have caused her to develop symptoms of OCD due to an uncommon neuropsychological disorder called PANDAS. From that point onward, she continued to grapple with a form of OCD known as scrupulosity, or religious OCD. These experiences shaped who she is by teaching her about the connection between mental and physical health. She learned the importance of acknowledging and conquering the fears that OCD feeds on, in order to regain control of her life.

TEDxCarrollCollege was filmed on March 14, 2020 under strict social distancing practices ordered by the local Montana government and Carroll College policy in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. These recordings were not open to the public.

Thank you for sharing this. My daughter suffered with PANS since age six. My son had a mild form for a short time. But my in the basal ganglia. it is treated differently from OCD and Tourettes, but many receive both psychiatric and medical treatment. it was great to have you speak on your experience with this. Much awareness continues to be needed until all hospitals and doctors treat this debilitating illness inflicting so many children.

I have been with ocd since moving to the states. I have intrusive thoughts all day. It is rare to not have them. I feel ashame for the thoughts. I started crying and panicking while I was eating with my bf the other day. I hate the physical sensation of my panic. I try to avoid it but it makes it worse. I think I’m a horrible person for finding other ppl attractive. I have shame in a lot of things I do, even if they aren’t bad. I am happy I saw this video.

I was one of the lucky ones too. I first got diagnosed with depression and anxiety but thanks to a second opinion, I got diagnosed with pandas which made so much more sense because of the intrusive thoughts, panic attacks, nightmares, constant peeing, etc

Thank you for sharing your story. I struggle with mental health issues that seem to act a lot like your OCD, and I tried getting disability for my problems, but my doctors will not commit to a diagnosis...

My granddaughter had been diagnosed a few months ago...she is being treated now. My son and daughter in law have been educating me as they are being educated. They live far away so I don't experience what they are experiencing. I'm glad I saw this talk. Its helped me know a few more things.

This is my daughter for the last 7 years. First diagnosed with Hashimoto's Encephalopathy/SREAT, then thought of as PANS, then diagnosed with Autoimmune Encephalitis. Was told it's all the same. 7 years of immunosuppressants, steroid infusions, IVIG, plasmapheresis oral steroids and chemotherapy. It's a monster. God keeps us going...

My ocd seems to be, bad, after a while I get used to that stage, worsens overnight for seemingly no reason.

Not religious but I still relate to this so much. For me, OCD mainly manifests itself in obsessive thoughts and compulsions around food and body image. I always thought my eating disorder was closely linked with my OCD diagnosis but my treatment team never seemed to connect the two.

There are some loose studies on psilocybin (psychedelic drugs) that re-grow or grow new neuro pathways. I wonder if this could treat similar trauma.
