We are halfway through our Agents of Deterioration series and today we're talking all about light! There are three main types of light that can cause damage to cultural heritage objects: Ultraviolet (UV) light, visible light, and Infrared (IR) light. They can all cause certain types of deterioration so you have to make sure your Lux is as a safe level to project your assets!

Every episode of this, my space museum idea makes more and more sense. no light, no water, no fire, no gravity, no thieves!

Great video! So glad to explore this channel. Mummies in the İstanbul Archeology Museums have a button to turn the lights on and off. Greetings from Turkey btw :)

All that knowledge and none of it trickles out of your ears! IMpressive! I suspect part of this is why they re-paint things in Disneyland quite often! (The light deterioration...fading...not the ear trickle-thing.)

Another great video. Thanks. You gave me some ideas on how to deal with some of my 100 year old books.

But don't forget that a large amount of infrared at once will make your painting emit a whiff of black smoke and irreversibly turn deep black! You should inform yourself about the current geopolitical situation and not place paintings opposite to windows which may be facing thermonuclear weapon explosions.

Would you (maybe after this series) do something on how like displays are designed, or more specifically how artifiacts are picked? My grandmother in her will gave a whole bunch of artifacts she collected in Africa to the Smithsonian, and so far they've used none of it. We are allowed to go see it in their storage room, but I wonder what would have them pick a certain item over another?

Enjoyed this one too! Have you ever done a video with book recommendations? I looked and didn't see any, but I've also not had a chance to watch all your old videos yet. If you have any archaeology related books (academic or popular level) that you've enjoyed or could recommend that could be an interesting video, or video series.
