I've suffered with depression for most of my life and found it difficult to organize anything, be punctual for appointments etc, I have tried medications but nothing worked. I am now 26 years old and last week, I went for an MRI scan for something unrelated to my depression.
After my MRI scan, I left the room with the machine, and I felt no social anxiety whatsoever, I felt confident, I didn't feel like I was about to crash at any moment, I sustained my energy well until I got home. This rarely happens to me, when I am out and about, my energy levels/depression/anxiety, differ greatly from one moment to the next.
when I was home, I felt no anxiety and no depression, this continued all through the evening and until I went to bed.
The next morning, I went for a walk, Then I came home, checked online for a new place to live, found a new place, arranged a meeting with landlord, applied for a loan to help with costs, went to the meeting with landlord, came back home, made several phone calls and tried to sort out these problems as efficiently as possible, all without feeling much anxiety or depression at all.
I never expected any of this to happen when I went in for an MRI but these are the results: noticeably improved energy levels, far less anxiety, far less depression, more able to deal with social situations and the ability to plan and carry out organizational tasks with great efficiency.
after noticing these things, I decided to look online to see if anyone else had reported that MRI's had helped them with depression. It turns out that there is growing research into using magnetic pulses to cure depression.
I'm sad to say that, unfortunately, the depression didn't stay away for very long but it has given me new hope and, should trans-cranial magnetic stimulation become available (and affordable) in my area, I will definitely be giving it a try.

@UniversumExNihilo Of what i have read, girls are more prone to stress and depression. Commonly due to media, social pressure, peer pressure, etc...

So testing girls will give higher probability of finding and testing these techniques.

@UniversumExNihilo

Where did you get the info that males are much more susceptible to get depression? Most basic textbook stats I've seen regarding the topic tends to says women are more susceptible. Just curious.

@Geo877 i agree, this is amazing stuff that deserves more media attention and funding.

@mzoltan14

Well from "Essentials of Abnormal Psychology" by Durand and Barlow, the lifetime prevalence of major depressive disorder in men is 2.6% whereas with women it's 7%. It does mention that men tend to be more self-destructive as Uni.Ex.Nihilo mentioned but since this is occurring more so in women, it makes sense that they would focus on women here.

@ollobrains1 They still have no results, and what relation would this have to neurolinguistics? The suppression of emotions are not linked to language usage and I can't see how this research can in any way be used in research on language.

I find these kind of behaviorist attempts at "curing" certain types of internal states to be quite problematic. Soldiers in war do these kind of "tricks" in order to be able to kill other human beings without feeling distress, but this can have repercussions later in life. Same approach was tested in curing Obsessive Compulsion Disorder by getting patients to rub dirt in their faces and suppress their compulsions in order to deal with it.

This is fantastic! It desperately needs media attention

We live in depressing times, eat depressing foods, live depressing lives and not to even mention that were constantly at war with ourselves and everyone around us... Wow, I guess depression is a real no brainer huh?

@mzoltan14

Of course they didn't check every single human, that would be impossible. I'll find the name of the epidemiology study in a bit.

@UniversumExNihilo they are trying to reduce varying results..

Depression is a symptom of ego, selfishness and self dishonesty.
No machine can make anyone less self centered.
