Majored in Communications with a concentration in Journalism, and am currently a field reporter in California. This degree works for me, but it’s important to mention that it is competitive. You need to want it and get those internships, be active in school clubs and network yourself. It is a Comm degree, u need to communicate

Man you are doing a great job giving teens the information they can't just get anywhere. You have built a great library of valuable information.

I think the best thing about journalism is that it is a great major to be wrong in. What I mean by that is even if you don't like journalism or you don't want to be a journalist, you're going to have enough time to learn other things and blend it with your study. For example, I'm currently learning data science, and it is achievable while doing my journalism degree without sacrificing anything. In fact, it made my essays and articles to be more specialized (which you will definitely need). Finally, yes, I don't think I'm going to be a journalist, but I am glad that I found that out while doing a journalism degree. Can you imagine that I realize that I don't want to do math and be an engineer in an engineering degree? Like sheesh, I don't think I can graduate.

Hey man! I totally think Journalism is worth it but it depends on the person's goals in life. Thank you for making a video for this one.

I've seen people with great success starting a Youtube channel to deliver current events. And guess what, no Journalism degree needed!

Journalists don’t do the job for the money, I really think that’s the key here. You got to want to do this job and know you won’t be getting much out of it in respects to salary.

Watching this video after I found out that Buzzfeed fired a bunch of writers to replace them with AI. What you said about journalism needing a human element is so true, which makes it especially sad.

Great video! I love the facts you bring up! I'm currently studying photojournalism and yeah! You're 110% right! Every class I go to they tell me "you're gonna need to be in love with this job cause the pay is steady but not amazing and that the market, especially for Photojournalists is stupidly competitive!" So I feel anyone going into journalism must really have to care about this career to be in it. I do, I love this field, but saying it's an easy thing to get into, especially while still in college, is 100% a myth!

It’s so hard to get a job in journalism. I think that people need to look at speciality programs for broadcasting. There used to be a print track and a broadcast track. But in today’s climate, most schools are combining everything.

Great video Shane! Once you're done with the "Is a Degree Worth It?" series, do you think you could do a video on professions that are beginning to transition to doctorate degrees as the minimum requirement? I feel that type of video could help people steer clear of the possible grad school debt if they want to get into healthcare, but are not certain about which occupation to choose. Some fields (in healthcare anyway) that are, or will soon be, experiencing this change include Nurse Anesthesiology, Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner, and Occupational Therapy.

My only regret about getting a journalism degree was not getting more experience in business or technical skills whether that was computer science, marketing etc. Also I graduated last year during the pandemic and ended up taking the first job I could get that has nothing to do with my writing or research skills. And that is being from one of the best journalism programs in the country. I'm now considering a masters in management to gain business experience and also start a career abroad.

That said, I know with only 6000 in debt after 4 years I'm in a much better position than most people journalism major or not. I think it's important for journalism majors to consider what transferable skills they have and how that could be applied to everything from law, insurance and so on. So I don't think this is a useless degree but it's important to think about other options besides reporting so you have a plan b, c, d and e.

Side note: could you do a video on is a master degree in management worth it? It's becoming a popular as a cheaper alternative to mba programs for recent college grads.

Any possibility you can compare the MBA degree with the MPA degree and where Business Administration would overlap with Public Administration, I know government jobs tend to have guaranteed benefits and a pension but I have also heard of people getting local, state, and federal government jobs with degrees like an MBA.
