In the book, they stole together. Rudy thought for stealing food but Liesel stole "the whisler". The first time they stole from Ilsa Hermann he accidentally left her shoes so he have to go back to get it. Rudy was the one who called her "the book thief." He only knew about Max when Liesel showed him the book Max had made, "Hair the color of lemon" the words in his picture drawn by Max. Rudy made the book thief story tragically beautiful. He was my favorite character. It's a shame he had not had her kiss when he was alive when there are a lot of chances she could have kissed him.
